This place called “Garajau” owes its name to the existence of many birds with that name (tern birds) , common in the sea around Madeira Island. Making their litters on the sea rocks, they leave the island in autumn and return in early spring . The cape that rises 126 meters above sea level where is the monument of Christ the King, was well known as 'Garajau Point' because the Island discoverers during the sea exploration found immense tern birds that flew fearlessly on their boats and oars (in Elucidário Madeirense).The Garajau zone is prime area of Caniço city, with beautiful family villas.
