Location of objectNearby in walking distance from the apartment•Tram 28 On the door step of the apartment is the Voz do Operário’s stop of the Electrico 28 (tram 28). This is the vintage yellow tram that plies various routes in Lisbon. It goes through all over the city centre, crossing many touristic attractions, while navigating along winding and very narrow streets to town up at sea level. The tram is a hop-on, hop-off service and there are more than 30 stops you can choose from. •Igreja e Convento de São Vicente de Fora On the other side of the street is the church and monastery of São Vicente de Fora, one of the most imposing and notable religious monuments in the city. It was built immediately after the city was recaptured from the Moors following a vow made by King Afonso Henriques to São Vicente during the siege of the Lisbon in 1147. This sixteenth century church and monastery with a Renais sance façade has in its cloisters a series of interesting Portuguese tile (azulejo) panels inspired by La Fontaine’s fables. •Feira da Ladra On Tuesdays and Saturdays, don’t miss one of the most popular and busy markets in the city, the Feira da Ladra, flea market, just a short stroll from the imposing church and monastery of São Vicente de Fora. Every imaginable object and curio – as well as genuine antiques – are on sale, and a visit to the flea market is a real walk through Lisbon culture. •Panteão Nacional Next to the Feira da Ladra’s premises is Portugal´s national pantheon located in the Igreja de Santa Engrácia, a baroque octagonal building. •Miradouro da Graça (viewpoint) This romantic terrace overlooking the city is a popular hangout for young groups thanks to its kiosk café and fantastic views that go from the castle down to the river. Although it\\\'s known as Miradouro da Graça, the official name is Miradouro Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, a poet who died in 2004 and who spent many of her days admiring Lisbon from this spot. One of her poems is seen on a wall facing her bust which stands looking out to the city. Standing behind it is an 18th century church, Igreja da Graça. •Miradouro da Sra do Monte (viewpoint) This is one of the least visited but perhaps the most breathtaking viewpoint in Lisbon. Together with that of the castle, this is the most complete view of the city, looking directly to the castle, the old town, and the modern districts away from the centre. A small 18th century chapel and an image of the Virgin overlooks it all, and there are several seats usually taken over by young couples. A tiled illustration of the view points out the monuments below. •Castelo de São Jorge (castle) The castle is a living memory of various events that marked the history of Portugal, having been in the hands of Romans, Suevians, Visigoths and Muslims. It was rebuilt in the 1940s and has recently been renovated. From the castle you can look down upon the city and visit the periscope on the Torre de Ulisses and the Centro de Interpretação da Cidade in the Sala Ogival. •Sé Cathedral The stones of Lisboa’s Sé Cathedral are a testament of the history of this city, since its days as an Arab port. Following the conquest of the city of Lisboa in 1147, D. Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal ordered the building of this cathedral, also known as Santa Maria Maior Church, on the ruins of a mosque. Lisboa Cathedral is the city’s oldest and most venerated monument, a symbol of medieval religious architecture. Unique Lisboa monument of Roman origins, it also features archaeological vestiges of Roman, Visigoth and Arab occupations. Within its thick walls you can admire the austere beauty of its main and lateral facades, its towers, naves, transept, chapel, walkways, Afonsine chapels, King D. Dinis cloisters and its various rooms such as the sacristy and the religious order’s house, the chapels of St. Bartholomew and St. Vincent. Don’t leave without first visiting the Treasure Museum of the Sé, comprising some noteworthy artefacts and the mother of pearl safe that stores the relics of St Vincent, the city’s patron saint.
