We stayed in Villa Albertina in May this year and were very happy we did. Enzo and his family are the nicest, warmest people you can meet and very kind. They were the only hosts on our 3 week trip that picked us up at the train and dropped us off again. When we arrived his sister kindly offered us coffee on the view terrace and we had a deligtful visit with her and her husband, and then when I commented on the pretty china, she took us inside to show us all her mothers best china. What a delight. The next day when we were sitting admiring the view, Enzo came out and shared a bottle of wine with us and showed genuine interest in getting to know us. He even bought us coffee at the station on the last day. This is what Rick Steves promotes in his books. It is not as much about how fancy the accommodation is, but about the people and connections you meet along the way. Get to know the lives of the people in the places you are visiting. This is the only place during our vacation that we felt that.
The apartment itself is very comfortable with everything you need, about a block away, on a fairly level part of the road, to the old center where there are a couple of shops for basic foods and wine. The town is the most authentic, least touristy one we saw during our trip but has a great waterfront walkway with patio restaurants looking at the view and a very good gelateria in that section (made fresh daily! Its the one closest to the ferry side of town). I highly recommend this lodging to get a sense of living like a local without sacrificing a nice view to enjoy after a long day of touring.
