Korčula has been associated with some world famous people, one of who is Marko Polo, medieval merchant and traveler, who’s house of birth is alleged in Korčula.
Town Korčula is situated on the northeast part of the island; build on semi island under the strict medieval urban regulations, in a herringbone pattern, specificity of which is still nowadays very recognizable.
Inside ancient walls and towers this town is bursting with palaces, churches and squares, houses from which many are adorn with family emblems, ornate coats-of-arms and decorative columns.
Vela Luka town is situated on the west part of the island in a 9 km long sheltered bay, one of the best anchorage place on Adriatic. Vela Luka offers a beautiful untouched nature, amazing surrounding islands with many lovely bays, beaches and crystal clear sea. Vela Luka is a typical Dalmatian coastal town, with its small alleys, squares, cafés and restaurants. It is not negligible to mention that fishing is the most significant business here, so gastronomic offer is based mere on sea food.
Towns Vela Luka and Korčula are 40 minutes car drive away. Between Korčula and Vela Luka there are many small picturesque villages such as ; Karbuni, Pri¸ba, Rači¨će, Lumbarda, Pupnat, Smokvica etc. very worthy of sightseeing and experiencing.
