| Kandy is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Sri Lanka often referred to as the Island’s Cultural Capital. It is 115kM from Colombo at 465 meters above sea level, making it conveniently close to the capital Colombo and significantly cooler. As a World Heritage Listed site, Kandy with its picturesque lake has numerous places of interest to travellers, including: ->the Dalada Maligawa (Temple of Tooth), the most important place of worship for Buddhists in the country and the centre of the famed August Kandy Perahera; ->Numerous historically important Buddhist temples; ->Botanical Gardens which started as a royal garden in the 14th century and considerably expanded by the British in the 19th and 29th centuries; ->University of Sri Lanka, Peradeniya situated close to the Botanical Gardens in the next bend in the river; and ->Victoria Golf Course for those planning a golf day. |
