Location of objectThe Giudecca district (called \\\'A Iureca \\\' by the Syracusans ) is one of the oldest of the historic center of Ortigia, but it should also be said that this area has had a difficult past because it was regarded as a neighborhood \\\' second-class \\\' because many of its historic monuments have been left to fall into disrepair making it the most degraded area of the historical center of the city aretusea . Nowadays it has provided a substantial revaluation of this tourist area , firstly many monuments have been restored eighteenth and nineteenth century (which has encouraged the opening of many meeting places and accommodation in many of these buildings characteristic d \\\' era ), then number of initiatives have been launched tourism - for cultural tourists could appreciate and learn about the history and the beauty of this troubled neighborhood , which was actually the \\\' Jewish ghetto \\\' of the city of Syracuse. In the Middle Ages the Jews of Syracuse ( descended from merchant families from Palestine , which in Roman times settled in Syracuse ) lived near the present district of Acradina , outside the city (restricted only to the island of Ortigia) as in the Middle Ages they were having a little \\\' everywhere (not just in Syracuse, but throughout Europe ) as criminals, usurers, infamous etc ... just because \\\' Jesus Christ \\\' was murdered by the Jews of Israel . In the fifteenth century , however, the then governor of Syracuse, John Cardenas meant that the Jewish community could be placed at the current district of Giudecca thus having the same privileges as their fellow citizens. The Jews Syracuse adapted well to their new neighborhood also building their places of worship such as synagogues and \\\' miqwaot \\\' ( Jewish underground ) , and made sure that the items that described them as \\\' unreliable people \\\' could be lost, so much so that many of them became very important personality in the field of trade, elle arts and humanities policy Syracuse , although the bias toward them did not cease in fact were stirred up by improvised Catholic preachers who incited the population to Christianity against the Jews of Syracuse . In fact, the suffering for the Jewish community did not end , in 1492, King Ferdinand II the Catholic ordered that all Jews should be driven out of Sicily since according to him were guilty of having funded the Saracens in their wars against the Catholics ( but also a hatred racial Christians towards the Jews ), and then the Giudecca was abandoned (although some of the Jewish religion remained hidden ) and over the sieges and earthquakes (particularly that of 1693 ) that destroyed their homes and their sacred buildings , and also those that forcibly converted to Christianity continued to be frowned upon by many members of the clergy citizen ( but also much practicing Christians ) because of their original religion that did not recognize \\\'Christ\\\' and the \\\' Saints.\\\' Finally, during World War II, the few Jewish families suffered obviously racist laws imposed by the Nazis and their is not heard nothing (do not know if you were deported or not). Nowadays there are very few exponents of the ancient Jewish community aretusea , though it must be said that thanks to Syracuse has been recognized for centuries as a \\\' multiethnic and multicultural city \\\' as it embraced all cultures over the centuries by the peoples of the Mediterranean, including the Jewish . Going back to the Giudecca , it must be said here that there are a lot of Christian sacred buildings arose on the ruins of synagogues which also have underground cellars where there were placed the \\\' miqwaot \\\', but also many buildings architectural style characterized by a mix of Sicilian Baroque and Hebrew Israelite style with elements that hark back to medieval and Renaissance architectural styles crossed by narrow , winding lanes ( lanes I, II , III and IV on the Giudecca ) that connect to the Ways of the Giudecca and the Crucifix ( on the site of the same name Church , which was destroyed in the earthquake of 1693 and abolished in favor of that of St. Philip the Apostle ) . A typical alley of Giudecca. The most important squares are Largo San Filippo in which is located the Baroque Church of St. Philip the Apostle (which inside contains an important Jewish underground ) , the Square of the Precursor in which there is the Church of St. John the Baptist , known as \\\' San Giovannello , \\\'but also another Jewish underground . It should be noted , finally, that this district is also part of the area known as \\\' Cannamela \\\' which will be discussed in the same link . Town: Italy, Sicily, SiracusaCity by the sea among the most beautiful in the Mediterranean, rich in history and monuments and expresses the variety and complexity of cultural Sicily from prehistory to the present day .In a fortunate position (a large limestone terrace that overlooks the coastline below ) and has a magnificent natural harbor , the city today is divided between an old part , Ortygia, and a new part of the recent expansion . The old town, which insists on an islet , and immediately show the charm of a place that has seen a succession , and stratification in over three thousand years , important expressions of the greatest civilizations of the Mediterranean. The Duomo ( Doric temple built on Sicilian settlements Byzantine basilica , Norman church , late Renaissance and Baroque finally ) alone it is a perfect synthesis . Visit Ortigia , the soul of Syracuse , is an enjoyable and profound together : a long journey in just one square kilometer between Greek temples and Christian churches , palaces Swabians , Aragonese and Baroque palaces, courtyards , alleys Arabs, shops , modest homes and large public buildings . Beautiful squares . A Jewish quarter and the synagogue became the Catholic Church. Lively streets and alleys solitary. Abandoned houses . The Fountain of Arethusa , a place linked to a myth. Restaurants , coffee shops, bookstores and shops. A library which houses rare books and antiques. A valuable coin collection . The Regional Gallery with works by Caravaggio and Antonello da Messina . The Institute of Ancient Drama . A surprising Cinema Museum. Some hotel . Almost everywhere a distinctive Baroque style date from the eighteenth-century reconstruction after the earthquake of 1693 and , already in the previous century , by the work of Vermexio , distinguished family of architects Syracuse . It \\\'s impossible to summarize the monumental wealth , beauty , vivacity and melancholy of Ortigia. However happen to follow it - according to precise routes, or relying on the case - always will meet the sea: the large natural harbor which is beautiful at sunset , the market , the smells in the streets, I fish menus of the restaurants. Everything in Ortigia back to the sea. And the relationship with the sea - more or less intensely lived antiquity to the present day - the old town owes its charm and its rich history, but also its future uncertain.
