Description of objectMany generations of gardeners lived here since 1819 carefully tending the fruit and vegetables in the adjacent walled garden.
The Gardeners Lodge in the courtyard of our Georgian house is now larger and fully restored while still maintaining many original features. The stone walls, brick fireplace, windows, pine ceilings and floors have been retained and renewed where necessary. The south west facing conservatory is bright, warm and enjoyed until late in all seasons.
The ground floor consists of a large fully equipped kitchen cum living room with a double bedroom en-suite. In the living area a glass fronted stove has now replaced the open fire and is a cosy focus on cooler evenings. Wood is provided for easy lighting. Also there is oil central heating. Upstairs there are two bedrooms and a bathroom. One bedroom has a double and single, the other has two single beds. Both bedrooms have sinks with hot and cold water to ensure there are no queues for the bathroom which has a bath and a shower.
The games room with table tennis, snooker and darts is a focus for all. Many parents surprise their offspring with their prowess and money is lost and won! Some of our visitors work up an appetite jogging around the garden paths, others amble through recalling the names of the plants. Children can play football on the lawn at the top of the garden. The bikes are a great attraction for the adventurous spirits and those resolving to get fit enjoyably.
Location of object Rowing our boat and fishing on Lough Derg whiles away a satisfying sunny afternoon. The forest park in Portumna has many signed walkways suitable for all fitness levels. Quiet walkers are often rewarded with the sight of native deer who roam freely. There are many local amenities such as hiking in the Slieve Blooms or Silvermine mountains, golf, and horse riding and swimming. To the west, Connemara national park and Galway city, the moon like landscape of the Burren with its caves, dolmens and the Cliffs of Moher are all easily accessible. To the south, the rock of Cashel, Bunratty folk park and castle, Killarney, Muckross house and the ring of Kerry are on most to-do lists. To the east, those who wish to visit Dublin can avail of the hourly bus from Nenagh. A visit to the beautiful city of Kilkenny with its fine castle is a must. To the north, the monastic site of Clonmacnoise, on the banks of the Shannon, has ruins of a cathedral, churches, round towers and a welcoming visitor centre.
Courtyard Cottages is the ideal location for a first visit to Ireland. This first trip is often the start of many return visits to this rural part of north Tipperary. It is a good central location for sightseeing. There are various pubs and restaurants and much to do locally. The local people are welcoming and friendly. Living in a cottage originally built before motorcars or airplanes can only enrich the experience of visiting our lovely country. Geraldine, Des and family will make every effort to ensure your visit is a memorable one.
