Before the arrival of the Knights, Vittoriosa already attracted those who controlled the shipping lanes in the Middle Sea. Its Castle of St Angelo dominated the harbour in ancient times but already the Pheonicians are said to have built a temple to Astarte before 550BC.PLACES TO VISIT: Inquisitor's Palace One of few surviving worldwide. Look out for the graffiti on cell walls. Re-live the Inquisition. Malta Maritime Museum Exhibits such as mid-18th century model of Order’s vessel and in old British Naval Bakery. Fort St Angelo Jewel in the crown of the islands, played great role in 1565 Great Siege. The Norman House Although parts of the house dates from 13th century, window and façade are 15th century.
