The Mandarin house is a very tastefully designed house, all furniture are old and restored, nothing is new. lots of candles and niches.
a bit further the melekounia (honey and sesame cookies) are handmade in a bakery. The village of Koskinou is a traditional one, with lovely friendly but initially distant greek people. for the rest there are artists from athens and some foreigners, and a nice amount of children although not directly neighbouring.
Sleeps 4-6. (or 7/8 if this amount includes 1 or 2 baby cots)
2 bedroom traditional village house with courtyard and romantic roof terrace with great views of the village and nearby sea. Short drive to beaches with crystal blue water. 15km to nearest golf course. Variety of village shops and tavernas nearby. 2km to supermarkets. Rhodes 15 min drive.
Location of objectThe house is in the middle of the old village but totally hidden away in a side street, being a dead end street. The house is the last house of the dead end street. It is neighbored by a ruin in which an old very friendly Greek lady comes to cook some times and reminisce old times.
Town: Greece, koskinou old village, koskinouKoskinou village exists of 2 parts. The old village/town. And around it the new area. In the old part, all the houses are kept traditional. Through strict restrictions the houses are kept with wooden doors and windows. The houses are simply dating from the 18th or 19th century and have been kept that way or are renovated. Typical for the village is the sala (living room) with a big stone arch through the middle. Another thing that is typical are the chochlakia, all pieces of master art. They are floors in which pebbles are laid, stone by stone into a typical mosaic. These floors nowadays cost a fortune to have this done. Again a typical thing of the houses in Koskinou is that they have wooden sofas in the sala, high raised platforms, on which one or 2 mattresses were laid, for sleeping or where they used to drink tea. The last typical thing are the courtyards surrounded by high walls for total privacy and closed of by iron handmade doors.
The streets of Koskinou are covered by chochlakia (pebbles) and marble. There is a small spring at the edge of the old village and there is a museum somewhere in the middle, where one can see how the people used to live and how the houses looked like in the older days: well worth a visit. There are 2 small companies that make the traditional melekounia, a cookie hand made of sesame and honey. One can buy them on the spot and take a look of how it is made. Koskinou old part has 2 excellent restaurants (yiannis and mezedakia), where traditional Greek food is made, and people come from everywhere to eat it. Watch it the Greeks usually don’t come before 10 pm to eat, after that the restaurants fill up easily and they have a wonderful busy atmosphere. Then as well in the old town is a lunch/tea room run by a Finnish/Swedish lady, who serves some cakes and ice cream. Attached to this café is a showroom totally left in the traditional way, so again one can experience how life was in the centuries before. This lady gives cooking lessons and Greek lessons.
There are a few mini/super markets/groceries in the old part and in the new part. There is a bakery, a butcher and even a small shoe shop.
Koskinou attracted a lot of artists in the past few decades, which is why all the houses have been made with a lot of feeling for style and atmosphere. There are even one or two small art galleries. The atmosphere in Koskinou is quite a quiet, friendly, relaxed, modest but also a vivid and lively one. There is no sign, non whatsoever of any hurdy burdy tourist traps. And only people that respect the way of living and want to experience the real Greek life are attracted to the village. The Greeks living in the village are not narrow minded as the artists and the central location of the island has involved in all sorts and kinds of people, keeping the Greeks with an open view. There are about 3 or 4 gay couples living in the village which have blended and integrated totally in the society. Also clothing of any kind does not raise any eyebrows. All with all a mellow atmosphere, in which everyone is private and by themselves, but all are respected and welcome.
