There are many restaurants along the front here but some of the best are in the old town. A walk up through narrow cobbled streets and steps between white washed houses will bring you to the main square at the top. Here you will be greeted with a wonderful church and views down the coast to Benidorm, or back to our mountain. The evenings here in the summer are bustling, with buskers surrounding the square where you can eat out at the many restaurants. There are artists and evening craft stalls in the summer too. If you can\'t make the walk up you can park around by the theatre and then its an easy flat walk into the square, but you will miss some of the cobbled streets. Tuesday morning is the vegetable market in town, with fresh fish in the covered market just around the corner, and the main market on the same day is down behind the football pitch by the river bed. It\'s huge. Altea nestles at the foot of the Sierra Bernia mountain range, next to the mouth of the river Algar. Many civilisations have come and gone. Iberians, Greeks, Phoenicians, Romans and Muslims all have left their mark and their influence. The name of the town comes from the greek Altahia which means, \"I cure\", and the name of the river means \"the river of health\". There are fiestas all year round in Altea. Highlights include the Easter Carnival, the seaman\'s celebrations in honour of San Lorenc, and the Castell de L\'Olla festivities with fireworks and music on sea and land around 12th August, and the towns main fiestas in honour of the Santissim Crist del Sagari and Sant Blai (Altea\'s patron saint), with the traditional Moros i Cristians, a mock battle between the Moors and Christians on the forth week in September. Our village Altea la Vella has its own 2 weeklong fiesta around the last week in January or early February with giant Paella, street barbeque and a candlelit procession. Nearby towns of Benidorm, Calpe, La Nucia, Alfaz, Albir, Polop all have their own festivals at different times so don\'t be surprised to hear fireworks going off somewhere in the distance. If you are feeling energetic, beyond the villa there is a dirt track road where you can walk around and up onto the ridge. Beyond that there is a walking track that will take you near to the top of the mountain to a picnic area. Take good walking shoes, plenty of water, and a mobile phone. Climb up further and you will find a cave at the top that will lead you through the mountain to a secret valley. Watch out for dinosaurs and teradactyls on the other side. Do not do this in the heat of the day. Enjoy the lovely smell of wild flowers, herbs and pine in the springtime. Fantastic views. The thriving tourist metropolis of Benidorm is only a short fifteen to twenty minutes drive from the villa -with the four great theme parks, Terra Mitica, Terra Natura, Aqualandia and Mundomar, being ideal to keep the family content. TERRA MITICA Discover all that´s hidden on the Mediterranean shores. Egypt, Greece,Rome and the The Islands, thousands of years converted into moments of fun emotion and adrenalin. You will find so many rides that you won´t have enough breath to do them all. This is the largest theme park on the coast with excitement for all ages. A spectacular day out that must not be missed! TERRA NATURA Experience an exciting journey through one of Europe´s biggest and most fascinating nature parks where you can see over 1,500 animals from all over the world. Then cool off in Terra Natura´s Water Park. AQUALANDIA This is the largest water park in Europe. It offers fun and excitement including the famous Kamikaze slide for those dare devils, travel at great speed and enjoy the splash at the end. You can also enjoy a more sedate swim in the lazy river or enjoy one of the many restaurants and bars. Aqualandia offers something for every age group. MUNDOMAR A tropical paradise and exotic marine park - including the Dolphin Experience. Other activities in the area include boat trips along the coast from Altea to Benidorm and Calpe, a Jeep Safari in 4 X 4\'s exploring the surrounding mountains and valleys, the Medieval Nights (including jousts on horseback) in the nearby castle of the Count of Alfaz and the unforgettable gala evenings at Benidorm Palace (Benidorm´s equivalent of Cesar´s Palace in Las Vegas). Town: Spain, Costa Blanca, Altea La VellaAltea is without doubt one of the most charming towns to be found on Spain\'s \'White Coast\', located in the region of Alicante on the Costa Blanca. The town is just 11 kilometres north of Benidorm, yet the two resorts are worlds apart. Altea is similar to other Costa Blanca towns in that it has a new and an old neighbourhood. The old section is perched on top of a hill from where you will find really spectacular views.Although the resort of Altea is less than 10 miles from Benidorm, the two resorts could not be more different. Altea is a relaxing holiday destination with historic buildings, cobbled streets, a beautiful church and a number of typically Spanish shops, restaurants and cafes. The resort of Altea Hills is perched on a mountain side and provides breathtaking views of the Mediterranean, the old town of Altea, and on a clear day you can even see the Alicante skyline which is around 45 miles away. From Altea Hills you can be on the beach within just a few minutes by car. The properties in the area range from luxurious villas that are worth several million euros, to more standard two and three-bedroom apartments. Things to do and places to visit in Altea. Altea has many attractions and you will not be stuck for things to do. The resplendent church of Nuestra Senora Del Consuelo was built in 1910 and it is a splendid example of a Mediterranean church with hand-painted, sea blue mosaic tiles. The shopping precinct of Altea is very quaint and old-style Spanish. The shops usually open between 10 am and 9 pm, but many shop owners will adhere to the custom of taking a siesta during the hot months, and therefore will close between 2 and 4 pm. The best way to get round Altea is on foot, as this way you can see the delightful old buildings on the cobbled streets that would be missed if you were travelling by car. You can also take a mountain walking tour with one of several companies that specialize in guided tours. In the main square of Altea there is a fascinating bohemian market where local craftspeople, artists and other sellers sell unique items between the months of April and September. Golfers will find the Altea Golf Club to be on par with other top golf courses in Spain; therefore Altea is a popular destination with golfers from all over Europe. Although Altea has plenty of traditional bars and restaurants, and you can enjoy a different location every night of your holiday if you wish, the nightlife is nowhere near as lively as in neighbouring Benidorm. However, as Benidorm is located less than 10 miles away you can easily take a taxi from your Altea accommodation if you want to stay out until the early hours.
