Description of objectOn the border of The Languedoc and Midi Pyrenees, lands of sunshine, mountains and castles...characterful gite and chambres d’hotes accommodation, 50 minutes south of Carcasonne.Our stone built house is around 200 years old and nestles in the foothills of the Pyrenees, in the Aude, deep in the south of France; access from UK airports is easy. A perfect base for walking, cycling, mountain biking and for exploring the history and legend of the Cathars. Chalabre is the nearest town (3km) for fresh bread and croissants each morning, and Mirepoix is only 10 minutes away. We can accommodate up to six people in three stylishly appointed bedrooms, 2 doubles and 1 twin. Dinner is served at the bed and breakfast next door where we live and guests at the house are welcome . WiFi is also available next door. The door from the square leads into an open plan contemporary kitchen / dining room, on through double doors into the ground floor double bedroom with WC. Sliding glass doors lead into a small, private, shady courtyard garden with olive and fig trees - just big enough for a table for two. The first floor is an open plan lounge with double doors onto a sunny terrace with dining for six and offering open views across fields and hills. The main bathroom with lovely roll top bath and shower over is on this floor and a further 2 bedrooms, 1 double, 1 twin, on the top floor. Two couples sharing the house can still enjoy a large degree of privacy. Location of objectIn the land of the Cathars, in the Languedoc, seeped in history and legend,ruined chateaux stand on rocky outcrops, testament to its troubled past. Montsegur, one of the most famous symbols of the Cathar resistance is around 20mins from the house. Many other towns of significance during this time are nearby including Puivert, Mirepoix, Fanjeaux, Bram and of course, Carcassonne.The cobbled streets of the restored, medieval city of Carcassonne offer a poignant insight into what life must have been like, lived among the ramparts and besieged by the Crusaders. The stained glass in the Basilique Saint-Nazaire alone is worth the visit. The Cite is open all year, Christmas markets are stunning. Try Kate Mosse, The Labyrinthe, or for something a bit more studious, A Perfect Heresy, Stephen O’Shea. Town: France, Aude, Sonnac Sur L' HersSonnac is a lively, rural village, completely unspoilt and therefore very French. Medieval towns and villages, markets, rivers, mountains, lakes...there is something for everyone.A network of cycle tracks lead from the village through ancient, picturesque towns and villages - Camon, Puivert, Mirepoix. The mountain cols provide for those who like more of a challenge - the Tour de France passes close to the village (stage 12 begins in Limoux, July 2012). The GR7, a long distance walking path that crosses the south of France, leads from our back door to Spain, though you may prefer to be back in time for lunch on your terrace or in the baking heat of the Square, and while away the afternoon with a book from our library. Lac de Montbel is 5km from the house and is a site exceptionnel covering 570 hectares, good for swimming, sailing, canoeing. Spend the day by the river Hers that flows through the village. A few hundred yards downstream, at the foot of wooded slopes is a natural basin, lovely for swimming. One third of the Aude is devoted to growing wines; a number of domains are within easy driving of the house, including Limoux. We can help to arrange tours and tastings. Whilst you don’t have the range and sophistication of the Alps, neither do you have the prices or the queues. An adult daily pass at Les Monts d’Olmes is around 20 euros and for a family, 60 euros. Les Monts D’Olmes (1500-2000 metres) is the nearest ski station, 40 minutes from the house. It offers family orientated skiing in the stunning Massif de Tabe region of the Pyrenees and has 23 runs, a snowboard park and ski school. Ax Les Thermes (1400 – 2300 metres) is about an hour away and is the largest ski resort in the Pyrenees. This lively resort offers 29 runs covering 80km and includes some beautiful forest lined slopes. A day adult pass is 29 euros. |
