Situada nas margens do rio Ceira, a cerca de 9 quilómetros da vila da Lousã, a freguesia de Serpins é um dos mais antigos aglomerados populacionais do Concelho. Apesar de, no início da nacionalidade a paróquia de Santa Maria de Serpins integrar o Mosteiro de Lorvão, o povoamento da freguesia parece ser bem anterior a essa data (século XII). Já em 943 Serpins (topónimo antroponímico) é referida como 'villa' rústica no território do Castelo de Arouce, pertencendo então metade dela a Zoleiman Abaiub (Salomão). A outra parte da 'villa' de Serpins pertencia, muito possivelmente, aos antepassados do notável conde Gonçalo Monis.
