Marsala is the first city in the province of Trapani and the fifth largest city in Sicily (after Palermo, Catania, Messina and Syracuse) [1]. It is City of Wine since 1987.Location of the town of Marsala in Trapani. Built on the ruins of the ancient Punic city of Lilybaeum (Lilibeum in Latin), from whose name comes the name of lilibetani (besides that of Marsala) for its inhabitants. In its 250 km ² Extension has a rich cultural heritage and landscape, and its territory includes, for example, the regional natural reserve of the Islands of the Lagoon of Marsala, including the island of Mozia, an ancient Phoenician city, open-air archaeological excavation . Its foundation is closely linked to that of Mozia, one of the islands, founded in VIII BC, which was a major Phoenician city. Capital represents the global Naval Archaeology [citation needed], since in the Baglio Anselmi Museum are housed the remains of a Punic ship, the only archaeological find the world of fighter craft, dating back to 241 BC, the year of the Punic wars fought before Lilybeo of the sea. During the first of three Punic wars, was besieged by the Romans, and defended by the Punic commander Imilcone. From here the historic siege of Lilibeo, of which the Romans had the better right. Today, after decades of building rugged and authorities regardless of the capital, and in anticipation of the implementation of an archaeological park, is currently excavating a large area of the city, always guarded by the institutions but never dug, or the area where there was the ancient Carthaginian city first, and then Roman, of Lilybaeum. The excavation had been initiated in the seventies with the discovery of Roman insula. The 2000's are marking a turning point: not least the discovery of decumannus of Venus CALLIPYGIA of the second century, and many traces of ancient civilizations (morgues, flooring, tools, remains of houses and roads). In particular, in 2007, the excavation of St John, has been found the sixteenth floor of the church, and in the hole next to it, a column collapsed on a pavement of white marble. In all excavations in the area, the visible layers of earth are a mix of earth and pieces of pottery, amphorae, coins, and various signs of ancient civilization. In July 2008, it was discovered a statue of Isis, and other writings that anticipate the presence of a temple of Hercules in the archaeological zone of Porta Nuova, destined to occupy a central position in the context of the Punic city of Sicily (and Mozia Lilibeo, two of the four cities with Solunto Punic Sicily and Palermo are in Marsala).
