Description of objectThe romantic port town of Lamu, with the village of Shela redolent in exotic ancient history and its maritime culture inescapably lures the visitor in search of tranquillity away from the stress of modern life. Lamu is mentioned in the first century A.D. “Periplus of the Erythraen sea” and the ancient port intrigued early visitors trading in ivory, slaves, spices and mangrove building poles to Arabia, India and further east to china. The famous Ming dynasty admiral explorer Zheng He sailed to Lamu. Over the years remarkable characters have gravitated to Lamu with its amalgam of coastal Swahili and Muslim cultures while the tourists of today cannot fail to be attracted to its miles of deserted beaches. Our house is built on the ruins of a formidable pioneer known as coconut Charlie\\\\\\\'s copra factory. You will sit at sunset on the beau Geste style roof admiring the Lateen sailed dhows scudding by on the brisk cool monsoon breeze – a sailors paradise to be sure in this haven of peace.Location of objectJust 15 minuets from Kenya\\\\\\\'s top Beaches built 27 years ago as a family holiday home, it is open, pretty and comfortably furnished with books, games etc, the ultimate in relaxation. All rooms have ceiling fans. There is no air conditioning but a cool monsoon breeze will have you drifting off happily to sleep. On the first floor the bedrooms lead onto a comfortable sitting area and to a verandah sheltered by lovely scented frangipanis and a beautiful mature mango tree. The house is taken care of by two permanent members of staff, cook and housekeeper who are there to cater for all your needs. Daniel speaks English and is happy to make arrangements for boats etc. The kitchen is staffed. The in-house chef Karissa will prepare all meals. Ingredients will be purchased by guests or opt for the staff to do the shopping and keep a record of the expenses. Fish and crustaceans brought to the house by local fisherman. Pork products, meat and chicken are difficult to find in Lamu. Lamu Old Town, the principal inhabited part of the island, is one of the oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlements in East Africa. How to get there; It is possible to fly to Lamu from Nairobi (both Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and Wilson Airport), Mombasa, and Malindi. There are several daily flights but note that the flights get booked well in advance. Planes land on Manda Island just across from Lamu town and there are always numerous options to go to Shela. Most of the big hotels have boats waiting at the airport at every arrival to take guests. Otherwise go to the jetty and simply ask for someone going to Shela. Further Details; Two world class hotels, Peponi and Kijani with excellent restaurants and bars. Exclusive boutiques on the waterfront, local shops, ATM, yoga classes and massage are all available in the village. Water skiing, windsurfing, laser sailing, deep sea fishing, snorkelling trips, picnics on deserted islands are available at the hotels. Recommended is sunset sailing on traditional dhows. Other: A roof top terrace covered with a traditional thatched roof, perfect for relaxing and entertaining, overlooks the large garden leading to the sea. A small terrace beside the first floor verandah provides additional dining area under the stars. |
