For more information, visit our website: http://www.essaouira-riad.net Location of objectOur house is ideally situated in the heart of the old town (The Medina of Essaouira)The riad is 5 to 10 minutes' walk to the port, the beach, the mythical place Moulay Hassan, 2 mns to the City Walls where you can contemplate magnificent sunsets and only 4 miles away from the Golf Courses of Mogador, one of the most beautiful greens in Morrocco.Town: Morocco, Essaouira, EssaouiraThe city, formerly called Mogador by the Portuguese who in the 16th century built the actual fortress, is a charming mid-sized seaside town with a very lively port. Situated just outside the old city walls, it is teeming with activity: fishing boats going and coming, fishermen repairing their boats and their nets, selling their fish etc. All through the day, you can buy freshly caught fish, raw or cooked, in one of the little stalls that border the sea.One thing you never tire of is strolling through the Moroccan markets, the famous “Souks” where you can buy all sorts of handicraft, spices and other food stock. In Essaouira you have got all kinds of Souks: the Fish Market, the Spice Market, the Handicraft Markets where you can find all kinds of clothes and leather goods and a lot of wood marquetery using the wood of the Thuja tree, a kind of local cedar. Before leaving Essaouira, don’t forget to visit one of the local Hamams (the Moroccan version of the Turkish bath) where at an additional charge you can also get yourself a delightfully relaxing massage. If you are a surfer or into wind/kitesurfing, you'll be pleased to know that Essaouira is an internationally renowned area for lots of fans. Want to play some golf in Esssouira? The finest golf courses are only 4 miles from the medina of Essaouira. EasyJet has daily departures to Marrakech from Paris, Lyon, London, Manchester, Milan, Madrid, Basel and Geneva from around 70¤ to about 400¤ according to dates. Atlas Blue, (Royal Air Maroc’s low-cost company) flies daily from Paris (plus 6 other French cites), London, Brussels, Milan, Geneva, Barcelona and Madrid for around 100¤ to about 500¤. Airport to City In order to get from the airport to the city, there is a shuttle every 30 minutes leaving just outside the airport from 6.30 a.m. to 11.30 p.m. ( bus no 19, 3 stops, the 1st being the famous “place Jemma-El-Fnaa”, price 20dhs) . By the way, if the airport’s foreign exchange counter is still open, you might be well advised to get some Moroccan Dirhams. If you carry Euros, they will generally be accepted by most people (bus and taxi drivers and shopkeepers), but their exchange rate will invariably be less advantageous than what you would get in a bank! Marrakech-Essaouira The Supratours bus company (http://www.oncf.ma/) Has daily links to Essaouira from their bus terminal at Avenue Hassan II, next to the train station. 5 departures (8.30am, 10.45am, 2.45pm, 5pm and 7pm) for a 3 hour trip at the rate of 80 dhs. It’s best to get your tickets the day before since the coaches fill up quite fast! If you are between 6 and 12 people, it might be a good idea to ask for a minibus with a driver at your hotel. By bargaining, you should be able to get a per person rate which will be of course 1 or 2¤ higher than the bus rate but you will not have to book in advance, you will have your own private minibus whose driver will come and get you at your hotel. Arriving in Essaouira Once you get to Essaouira, be it by bus, taxi or minibus, you will be left at the city gates since car traffic is not allowed inside the Medina. You will easily find (or rather be found by!) one of the carters who will pull your luggage on his cart to the doorsteps of our Riad. Be sure to agree on a rate BEFOREHAND! |
