Town: Portugal, Camacha, Camacha
Camacha is a small village located on the east side of the island, where the Madeira wicker industry began and where it is still concentrated today.
Besides being the wickerwork handicraft centre, Camacha is internationally known for folk dancing.
It was also in this village, more precisely at Largo da Achada that football was played for the first time in Portugal in 1875. It was Harry Hinton (son of the wine and sugar merchant Willian Hinton), who organize it and brought the ball from London.
Several theories explain the origin of the name of the village. The most known is that the name is due to the influence of D.Fernando Camacho (a local noble of Spainish origin).
