Taking a walk up the shore will take you past fishing boats, small local restaurants and bars,clubs and past pretty little olive and fruit groves - bring along your camera as there will be some great photo opportunities! Another pleasant option is to head up to the Marina at the far end of the town. If you\\\'re staying by the beach or in Kalamata\\\'s center, it may be worth taking a taxi here, as the walk takes around 30 minutes - it can feel much longer in the heat of summer. Here is a modern little bay with impressive yachts and bobbing boats, along with some good waterside bars, cafes and restaurants. Magic of the Mountains The southern Peloponnese mountains form a stunning backdrop to Kalamata, and keen walkers and nature lovers will find the rugged mountain range throws up plenty of opportunity for challenging walks and rambles. The vast mountain that sits immediately behind the town has a trail running from its base right up to the top - set out early in the morning before the heat kicks in, and be prepared to spend around four or five hours getting to the top. The fruit and vegetable market held in the town center is a riot of color and exotic smells, and the produce on sale tastes every bit as good as it looks. The Kalamata Beach covers a stretch of about four km and boasts of crystal blue waters. It has been awarded with the blue flags of Europe. The beach is famous for its scenic beauty and colorful shells found on its coast. The famous Byzantine church of the Virgin Ypapanti is located in the town. It is famous for the Kalamata silk woven by the nuns here. There are several other churches located within the city which should be seen for their architectural beauty. There are several museums in Kalamata which provide the visitors with interesting historical information. The Railway Museum is located to the south of the Municipal Park. The Benakeion Archaeological Museum located in the heart of the city, houses treasures ranging from the Bronze Age to the Roman period. Kalamata hosts a number of cultural events and festivals. The Kalamata Dance Festival is held every year and focuses on the exchange of Greek and foreign dance troupes. Town: Greece, Kalamata, BergaUpper verga is a unique little village only 20 km from Kalamata. Located on the first peak of Taygetos at 1000 meters altitude and horizontal distance is 2 km from the sea. The combination of the proximity of the Messinian Gulf and the high altitude offers a uniquely fascinating phenomenon.The view is breathtaking and simultaneously with a feeling of tranquility. Both dry and cool climate is cool even on the hottest days of the heat wave. Unlike the winter the village is above the clouds and snow often falls like a whitewash bride. Here you can enjoy the mountain fresh air and oxygen while inside 15 minutes to descend to bathe in the sea, in one of the many great beaches in the municipality Kalamata. The passage from the Upper Verga is one of several famous point travel, hiking trails. Starting from the beach Vergas through traditional pavement, passing through the village, we reach the highest peaks of Taygetos favorite destination of many mountaineering clubs. The quietness, the traditional Greek atmosphere with the local walnut, mulberry,and chestnut trees. The nostalgic sounds of the bells of the kids heard from afar, offer days and nights have liked the big and small are discovering with great pleasure. The crystal clear waters of the springs kylane and irrigate the trees of the village and the gardens with pure vegetables. In the plaza located at the highest point, with huge trees and the church, the Virgin Mary, ending its narrow cobbled streets. There the people gather in the evenings and sit around the stone mantel chatting and enjoying the environment. Our festival in the center is every year on 14 and 15 August. The beaches of Santova Abia, Mikri Mantineia and Kalamata are within 10 to 14 kilometers from the Upper Berga and within 15 minutes going down one can enjoy a swim in the cleanest waters in Greece. Certainly we can see all these beaches, but also the whole Messinian Gulf. Berga is the gate of Mani, said that the name comes from the wall were built Maniates to face from 22 to 24 June 1826, the 6,000 Turk-Egyptians Ibrahim. Mystras, Olympia, the famous caves of Diro the region of Mani, Monemvasia, Mycenae, Areopoli, Itilo, Gythio and Sparta. The area has excellent balance between the mountains, the view, the sun and sea, but also the sights, making it as an ideal base for excursions to various parts of the Peloponnese. A little higher than the Verga - Kalamata made a sport (paragliding), which has existed since the mid 80s. But developed rapidly all over the world because of the ease of learning, low cost, safety and satisfaction. Especially in Greece and more specifically to Verga - Kalamata you can enjoy it because it is ideal for the sport, as the climatic and soil conditions are favorable.
