Town: Croatia, Zadar, ZadarIn the early centuries of Croatian history, Zadar was very much connected to the Croatian rulers (it is said that the abbess of the Benedictine convent, ika, was the half-sister of the Croatian king Petar Kre¨imir). In the XI cent. Zadar recognized their rule, and in the XII cent. the rule of the Craot-Hungarian ruler Coloman (in 1102 he was crowned in Biograd).
The fact that in 1177, the citizens of Zadar awaited for Pope Alexander III with songs in the Slavic language speaks of the Slavic origins of the city. The period from 1102 – 1409 was characterized by the rule of the Croat-Hungarian rulers and the numerous revolts against the Venetians. Venetian rule lasted from 1409 – 1797after which the Zadar region went through a period of first Austrian rule (until 1806), and the period of French rule (1814 - 1818).
With the Treaty of Rapallo from 1920, the city of Zadar was turned over to Italy. After heavy bombing of the city in the II World War, Zadar was joined with Croatia and the Federation of Yugoslavia.
The recent unpleasant events of the seizure of this region are proof of its vitality: in 1991, the Serbian paramilitary forces with the help of the Yugoslav army brutally attacked the city and the localities surrounding it, destroying everything until the successful Croatian army action in 1995.
Zadar was settled three thousand years ago. The first written proof dates from the IV cent. B.C., and material traces from the IX cent. B.C. The first inhabitants were the Liburnian tribe, while the city acquired its character of from the Romans conquer. At the beginning of the VII cent., it became the capital of Dalmatia and remained so until 1918. In the IX cent it was the center of the Byzantine theme. Find out more about Zadar
