Description of objectRomantic accomodation in the heart of the Medieval Quarter of Viterbo, one of the most perfectly preserved, walled, medieval cities of Europe. It dates to at least the year 1400 and the walls are built of peperino, a volcanic rock. The area is famous for its spas with healing qualities and was the favored places for the popes to take the waters as in the luxurious \\\'Terme Dei Papi\\\' or Baths of the Popes. Ten minutes outside the city are the wooded hills of Mount Cimini, and Lake Vico. Lake Bolsena is 35 minutes to the North. The Lake is beautiful and perfect for a day trip. There are many interesting hilltop cities on the way, including Montefiascone, whose famous wine, \\\'Est Est Est\\\', you can taste along the way. There is a train to Rome every hour which takes about one hour 15 minutes. It is also possible to get the train to Florence or travel to Sienna for the day. The Mediterranean Sea is 30 minutes by car at Tarquinia and Tuscania where abounds in Roman and Etruscan archaeological remains and the architecture is truly amazing. The medieval quarter of Viterbo is famous for the antique shops, and craft shops based on the famous \\\'Via San Pellegrino.\\\' Your house is off this street! Viterbo is the perfect base for day trips to many parts of Italy.

Town: Italy, center town, ViterboAs a settlement Viterbo dates back to Etruscan times. Between around 1100 and 1300, it was one of the most important cities in Europe. By the 13th Century it had 50 castles under its control. It was the place where Popes took refuge when driven out of Rome and for several decades was the seat of the Papacy. It was the scene of battles between potential invaders of Rome and papal armies. With the departure of the Papacy to Orvieto and then to Avignon Viterbo declined in importance. It was further hit by Black Death, which killed two-thirds of its population and a major earthquake in 1349. Last century it was damaged by appalling Fascist-era town planning and then by Allied bombs. These days its population is about the same as it was in the 13th Century, at around 60,000. Apart from its tradition its main claim to fame now is that Italy’s gold reserves are held there
