Town: Italy, Cilento, SapriSapri is an Italian town of 7,030 inhabitants in the province of Salerno in Campania. It is the largest country in the Gulf of Policastro.
Sapri, the last town in the south of the province of Salerno, is located at the southern Campania, a few kilometers from Basilicata, on the Tyrrhenian Sea, on a small plain on the coast overlooking the bay of Sapri, in the Gulf of Policastro, to the south the Cilento coast, and is surrounded by a semicircle in the southern Apennine mountains that rise behind him.
Sapri is best known for the tragic expedition Carlo Pisacane of 28 June 1857, mentioned in verse from the famous poem \\\'Spigolatrice Sapri\\\' by Luigi Mercantini.
Settlements have been found in several sites in the surrounding area inhabited saprese, in particular to the locality to locality Carnal and violas. Do not you have, then, traces of buildings or settlements of particular importance to the Roman Empire, when built an impressive seaside villa, equipped with landing, spa, theater and mosaics of high artistic quality (these observed before their destruction). There are traces of the building over a large area in loc. Cammarelle (a name taken from the deposits of the area of the villa, adjacent to the Roman port). At the beginning of the last century it was active in the area a \\\'carcara\\\', used for the production of lime. This presence can let assume that a work of \\\'commendable\\\' recycling, the imposing structures of the villa have been used as a stone quarry and reduced to lime. The only consolation to the loss of this historic residence, can be determined from the poetic realization that many buildings Sapri have, perhaps, in their walls, part of the Roman villa and its history.
