The city is located at the center of a wide bay, between Cape black and Cape Verde. The origin of the name of Sanremo seems to derive from a corrupted form of San Romolo (in local dialect is said by San R½mu, then borrowed Sanremu) or Sant\'Eremo of St. Romulus, a bishop of Genoa, who took refuge at the foot of Mount Bignone. The first historical settlement dates back to Roman times, but the expansion did not occur until later. In the ninth century Sanremo was subjected to continuous attacks by Saracen pirates, who forced the local population to take refuge in the mountains. In 1794 it was occupied by the troops and became the capital of the jurisdiction of the Palms. After the restoration of the Savoy (executed in 1814) was annexed to the Kingdom of Sardinia. Sanremo in 1361 came under the Republic of Genoa, until in 1367, when the population had a collection to redeem himself and become a free commune, always under the protection of Genoa, but with its Statute. For almost two centuries remained under the protection of Genoa, but in 1745 it was bombarded from the sea by the British and clashed with Genoa, who in 1753 harshly repressed the revolt. At the end of 800, the town saw the transition from agriculture-based citrus groves, flourishing, flower growing. There are still traces of the agglomeration town of Sanremo, with a circular shape and a maze of streets made for a defensive purpose. Its capital, Imperia has recent origins as it is founded in 1923 by the union of modern Oneglia and Porto Maurizio. The city\'s name derives from the River Impero that runs between the two towns. Even the city\'s history is not unitary but linked the two municipalities from which: Oneglia was founded in the communal and in 1576 it was ceded by the Doria to the Savoy, who made an important outlet to the sea of Piedmont. The town boasts the birthplace of Edmondo De Amicis.Porto Maurizio has more ancient origins of the nearby Oneglia, was already inhabited in Roman times and in the sixth century played an important role as a port of the Byzantines. It was a free commune and, from 1200, Porto Maurizio became part of the Republic of Genoa.
