Thanks to the splendid climate, the superb, restful panorama of the Archipelago, standing out on the horizon in a myriad of light and colour, can nearly always be seen from here. The exact origin of the city dates back to 716 b.c. when it was founded by Greek colonies from Messana. After centuries of Arab, Norman and Swabian dominion, it also came under the rule of the Aragonese, whose influence can still be seen in the architecture of the castle towers, and finally under the Bourbons. The battle of 20th July 1860 was the last act in its troubled history.
