The village dates back to the time of the Venetian occupation of Crete. It is mentioned in the \\\\\\\'Kastrofilakas\\\\\\\' census and it is said that a Venetian passed by the village in 1624 and wrote his name on the wall of the St. George church.
In 1624 the Monastery of Vate was already established. At around the same time a church dedicated to the Assumption of our Lady was built. At the time of the Ottoman occupation of Crete, the village was populated mainly by Ottomans with only 2-3 Christian families. The rebel leader Nikos Xenikakis, who fought at Arkadi Monastery in 1866 was born in the village.
The site Melissokipos (Bee-Garden) can also be found nearby. At Melissourgaki we can find the church of St. George, the village\\\\\\\'s main church, that is adorned with several murals, the church of the Assumption of our Lady, an old Byzantine church with well preserved murals adjoined by the village graveyard and the church of St. Stephen an old chapel. The chapel used to be an abode of monks as is evident by the remains of two rooms found nearby.

Kamelia apartments are located 300m above sea level near the village of Melissourgaki, 30 kilometers from Rethymno and 25 kilometers from the renowned village Anogia. The village has a population of about 80 people, whose main occupation is agriculture and domestic animal husbandry. Their main produce is olive oil, locust beans, raisins and wine grapes. The cave of Giannakas is located close to the village.
