Naturalistic itineraries & Escursions: CastelMola You can make the trip to Castelmola on foot or with the bike (is about 10 km distant) you will appreciate and admire the beauty of a vast territory and admire the tallest living volcano in Europe. Castelmola is an ancient medieval village, with a unique view, situated above Taormina. The Alcantara river park the river runs through the Alcantara valley locked in by the hills of loam rock and sandstone it passes by Castiglione di Sicilia (city of wine) until finally flows into the Ionian Sea. Thousands of years ag? the valley was invaded by a powerful lava flow which gushed out of the outermost etneic craters, the Monte Moio, and did not stop until it reached the sea. In this manner the thick blanket of lava covered the old bed, which the river had dug out through the sandstone over the course of the centuries. But the water of the river, resuming its slow flow, in time engraved and smoothed walls more than 20 meters high, reaching its old sandstone bed and forming some suggestions of \\\'gole\\\' (throats) from the high basalt prism walls once curved, once lightly undulating, according to the modality of the cooling lava. It is recommended for expert excursionists who are very good swimmers but it can also be enjoyed by families who like nature, silence and want to cool down . You will need a bathing suit and a pair of tennis shoes. Beware of the temperature of the water that is very cold even in hot season! Isola Bella is a small island in Taormina. Also known as The Pearl of the Ionian Sea,There is a narrow path that connects the island to the mainland beach. The island has become natural reserve. Etna the largest volcano in Europe (its volume is at least 350 Km3), one of the most active volcanoes on earth (in terms of productivity and frequency of eruption). Foremost it holds the record for number of eruptions out of all the volcanoes that exist on this planet, its first historically documented eruption dates to around 1500 AC. Historical itineraries: Castiglione di Sicilia Founded by refugees from Naxos in 496 BC, Castiglione di Sicilia was destroyed by the troops of Syracusan tyrant Dionysius I. It was successively ruled by the Roman, the Byzantine, the Norman and the Swabian. A number of relics scattered throughout its territory testify to its ancient past. Among these are the ruins of a Greek acropolis, of a small Byzantine temple, of a Saracen tower and of a Norman castle. Castel Leone – The Leone Castle, dominates the small town. Nestled atop a high rocky spur, it served as a guarding post since the antiquity. It offers a beautiful sight of the town and the Etna volcano. To the East, the remains of a fortress of the 8th century BC are visible. Aci Castello & Cyclops’ Coast The Castle – Built of black lava strone, this Norman fortress is nestled atop a rocky spur on the sea. This place has been fortified since the Roman Age, when it hosted the Rocca Saturnia. Destroyed on several occasions, it was rebuilt by Tancredi in 1189. Under the Bourbons, around 1787, the castle was used as a prison. A splendid view over the faraglioni and the Lachea island can be enjoed from its top. The castle houses the small City Museum, collecting archaeological relics and mineral specimens. History: Daughter of Nereus, the sea nimph Galatea fell in love with the shepherd Acis, son of God Pan. Unfortunately, she caught the eye of cyclop Polyphemus as well, the enemy of Ulysses. As the nimph rejected him, he, jealous and hatred, killed the young shepherd. Zeus, moved to pity by the pain suffered by the young Nereid, transformed her lover into a river (to-day’s Akis) that flowing towards the sea, the realm of Galatea, enables the two to meet for ever more. The nine Aci – According to a legend, the body of the young shepherd killed by Poliphemus was dismembered into nine parts, upon which the nine Aci-cities were built. They are Aci Bonaccorsi, Aci Castello, Aci Catena, Aci Platani, Acireale, Aci S. Filippo, Aci S. Antonio, Aci S. Lucia and Aci Trezza. This stretch of Sicily’s Eastern coastline is also known as the Cyclops’ Coast.
