The important tourist development has led to considerable transformations in the local economy: The old system of farming and sheep rearing has been ousted by an intense activity based on the tertiary sector, in which building and tourism prevail .Arzachena itself has attracted new inhabitants from all over the island and has become a modern town. On the coast a number of resorts with a strong tourist vocation have been created and developed and now enjoy international renown. Porto Cervo was built from scratch and became the heart of the Costa Smeralda . It is a village equipped with all kinds of services, able to satisfy, the most sophisticated requirements. The atmosphere there is one of exclusive holidays and on Promenade lined with shop windows displaying the creations of the most prestigious designers, it is not unusual to come face to face with holiday-making VIPs. Numerous events of a highly cultural nature are held there in summer. Concerts of classical music are held regularly in Stella Maris, the famous little church dedicated to the Madonna, standing on the hill looking down on the harbour. The church itself is well worth a visit: it houses a painting by El Greco, while the grandiose bronze doors are the work of sculptor Luciano Minguzzi. The combination of sport and tourism flourishes on the Costa Smeralda where a great many sports events are held . Starting from Rally event, at the Cervo Tennis Club, a hotel with seven tennis courts, tournaments are held in which some of the most famous names in tennis take part. The splendid golf course (18 holes, par 72) , about 6500 metres long, is laid out between two stupendous bays, offering golfers a unique panorama. Sailing is practised intensely at Porto Cervo, where the most famous yachtsmen meet every year to compete in national and international regattas. However, the vastness of the territory offers many other possibilities for tourism, aimed at different holiday-makers from those who frequent Porto Cervo, people who can satisfy their needs for a clean sea, unspoilt nature and excellent services just as well in the neighbouring resorts.
