The island has award winning beaches, breathtaking marshland scenery and an enviable fair weather microclimate. Add to this a rich maritime and industrial past, alongside Kentish festivals and fares it offers a wealth of discoveries. The word Sheppey is derived from the ancient Saxon word ‘sceapige’ meaning sheep. King Canute stayed at a fort, which was previously on the site of Shurland Hall. It is also rumoured that this is where Canute sat on his throne; in the waters around the island and commanded the waves back. HenryVIII visited Shurland Hall at Eastchurch around 1560 and was also responsible for the building of Garrison Fort in Sheerness to protect the mouth of the Thames and the River Medway. The most famous of the crusading Vikings, Hengist and Horsa invaded in 798 ad. mooring off Sheerness and the white horse of Kent that is included in the Swale Heraldic Crest is representative of their steeds. The first powered flight within the UK took place on the Isle of Sheppey in Leysdown at Muswell Manor in 1909 and so the site is now known as the birthplace of UK aviation. There is a rich Naval heritage on the island. The island also boasts its own Abbey which has a small gatehouse museum attached to it that houses a model of the Queenborough Castle (unfortunately demolished now) Add to this the following ingredients: RSPB Nature Reserve, Protected Bird Sanctuary, Bird watching, Sailing, Pedaloes, Windsurfing, Yachting, Kayaking, Canoeing, Boating, Cycling with safe cycle paths, Horse riding, Fishing, Golf, Pitch n Putt, Clay Pigeon Shooting, Kiting, Diving, Walking, Jet skiing, Mini Railway, Quad Biking, Scrambling Track, Naturist Beach, Swimming, Sports Centres and many Carnivals and Festivals throughout the summer months and you can see there is plenty to do and see. Nearby you can find picturesque Canterbury, steeped in history and with its imposing Cathedral and Ashford which has great shopping or medieval Faversham, the market town of Kings which is mentioned in the Doomsday Book with its seafaring heritage and quaint restaurants and Inns. There are 11 castles to discover in Kent, also within close proximity are many forts and garrisons, The Royal Naval Dockyard at Chatham provide an interesting and informative day out for all the family. There are two Zoos’ within a comfortable drive, Howletts and Port Lympe as well as Wingham Wildlife Park, Druidstone Wildlife Park, Wildwood Adventure Discovery Park and Mount Ephraim Gardens. There is a Paddle Steamer for river rides at nearby Maidstone and Carting for the more adventurous at Sittingbourne. Sittingbourne also boast a Greyhound Racing Track if you fancy a flutter. You could also try a ferry crossing to France, rail crossing from Ashford or a flight from Manston Airport if feel you want to spread your wings.
