| Porto Santo, knonw as the Caribbean of Europe”, is an island about 10 miles long and 5 miles wide and has only about 5000 local inhabitants. Along with its larger sister Madeira, Porto Santo is one of the Madeira archipelago. Located in the Atlantic ocean approximately 30 miles north east of from Madeira, the island, which has a mild climate all the year long, is easily accessible via regular air crossings several times a day, or via ferry which sails daily from Funchal harbour. |

| Porto Santo is also known as the 'Golden Island' due to the golden colour of its sand, covering the 9 kms of the south coast of the Island. The blue of the sea and the temperature of the sea waters make this beach the prime atraction for many visitors. Vila Baleira is the name of the main locality of the island. Facing the sea, the village has a rythm of its own, inviting the visitors for stroll through its narrow roads and squares. The original sidewalks and the well preserved facades are a few of the attractions of the village where one can visit the House of Colombo, who lived in Porto Santo for a few years. On the Island there are several bars and restaurants contributing for its evening entertainment. The local gastronomy is an important asset of Porto Santo, offering the visitors a wide range of restaurants serving regional specialities, both in the village as along the coast or in the mountain. |
