It was founded by Frederick II in the XIII century. The castle gained some visibility during the period of the Sicilian Vespers. During such period the castle became, in fact, the seat of Parliament and, shortly after, the residence of the Aragonese kings such as Frederick III. Today it houses the museum of the city. The design and direction of the work was entrusted to the military architect Riccardo da Lentini who built it on what was then an impregnable rocky promontory on the sea, connected by a narrow strip of land to the city and its walls. The castle was also equipped with an impressive moat and drawbridge. The name 'Ursino' given to the castle most likely derives from “Castrum Sinus” or “the castle of the gulf”. On March 11, 1669, the opening of a fracture above the town of Nicolosi, marked the start of the most impressive eruption on Etna since records began. By April 16, the lava came around the castle and while not eroding structures, it filled the moat, covered the ramparts and eventually shifted the coast line by a few hundred meters. Some decades later, the earthquake of 1693 caused a series of structural damage which permanently compromiside the military role of the castle. After an extensive renovation, the castle continued to host troops from Piedmont first (1714) and Bourbon after, taking the name of Forte Ferdinandeo. The castle continued being used as prison until 1838. The “Castello Ursino” remained untouched until the 30s of the twentieth century, when it was extensively renovated and later used as a Museum.
