Description of objectMavalo is a self-catering luxury lodge located on Zandspruit private reserve, in the heart of the South African bush. The reserve is 3km from Hoedspruit, a town with 3000 inhabitants offering all facilities (shops, airport, medical center…), 60km away from the famous Kruger National Park and 40km from the Blyde River Canyon, the 3rd largest canyon in the world! At Mavalo Lodge the South African bush spirit prevails - thatch roof, large covered patio, stone wall - and is subtly combined with the comfort of a luxury lodge - reversible aircon in all rooms, bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, private swimming pool, fully equipped kitchen, laundry and living room… Zandspruit, the private reserve Mavalo Lodge is located on, spreads on 1000 hectares from which 650 remain completely wild (the Wilderness Area). Mavalo Lodge is on a parcel of more than 1 hectare, providing quietness and privacy for all residents. No fence between properties is allowed, allowing a free circulation of wild animals on the whole estate. However, security being the priority on Zandspruit, only harmless animals are present on the reserve. Zandspruit Wilderness Area is only accessible to residents of the estate. It offers various possibilities of safaris and hikes. No need to go far to enjoy the South African wild life, it takes place in front of your eyes at Mavalo Lodge! Pilots will also enjoy the Zandspruit private air strip where small planes can land and take off directly from the reserve. A great way of discovering the Blyde River Canyon and the Drakensberg mountain range! Mavalo Lodge welcomes you with its 3 double bedrooms (a fourth one is available on a mezzanine floor), its large and fully equipped kitchen, its spacious living room opened on the outside, its double covered patio and its swimming pool surrounded by a large wooden sundeck, all of it offering a magnificent view over the bush and the Drakensberg mountain range. The bedrooms: The Ilanga bedroom is the master bedroom of the lodge. It includes a king size bed, a spacious en-suite bathroom with two wash basins and a toilet. The Intaba and Umuthi bedrooms - located on the other wing of the lodge - are both with en-suite bathrooms and include a queen size bed, two wash basins, a shower and a toilet. A queen size bed on a mezzanine floor and a guest bathroom with wash basin, shower and toilet are also available for guests visiting for a day or two. The Living Room: The entertainment area is very spacious and opens both on the kitchen and on the covered patio and sundeck (two sliding doors provide free access to the outside and offer a magnificent view on the bush and the Drakensberg mountain range). It is furnished with two large sofas comfortably sitting up to 8 people, a flat screen TV, a home entertainment system, a DVD/CD player and a DSTV decoder (for South African paying channels). The kitchen: The Mavalo Lodge kitchen is fully open towards the living area and very functional. It is equipped with five gas stoves, a conventional and a micro wave oven, a two-door fridge, a kettle, a toaster, a coffee maker and lots of cupboards. All kitchenware and household linen are also available. Behind the kitchen you will find the laundry including a dish-washer, a washing machine, a dryer and all the ironing equipment. The double covered patio, the sundeck and swimming pool: Because in Africa life mostly takes place outside, Mavalo Lodge offers a large outdoor entertainment area including a double covered patio with a comfortable outside lounge, a massive 12-seater table and a built-in braai (the South African barbecue), a refreshing swimming pool and a wide wooden sundeck. Location of objectZandspruit Reserve houses a wide variety of wild animals. Game viewing on the estate includes giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, warthogs, several kinds of bucks, jackals, and many species of birds and other small animals.Game can be seen not only in the Wilderness Area but also in the developed part of the reserve (North of the Sandspruit River) as they are free to roam around the estate. Properties have no garden, the natural environment being such. Animals are not chased on the reserve and it often happens that a giraffe has a drink in the swimming pool or impalas have a rest in front of the patio. No dangerous African specie (like lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo or leopard) lives on Zandspruit, making the estate fully enjoyable to residents. At Mavalo Lodge the prime activity will therefore be resting and getting back to the roots, seated on the patio or laid down on the lounger next to the pool, listening to and looking at the wonderful surrounding nature. When it is time for more action, the Wilderness Area, only accessible to residents and their guests, will be your favorite adventure and discovery field. Several tracks are available for hiking, mountain biking and horse riding. When with your vehicle (preferably a 4x4), stop at one of the water holes and have a picnic or a sundowner while watching the animals or the sun setting behind the majestic Drakensberg Mountains. Located along the Sandspruit River that separates the Wilderness Area from the developed part of the reserve, the Bush Camp is another treasure from Zandspruit. It is a small complex made of two rondavels (small round African houses) with double bedroom, toilet and shower, a swimming pool and main building (lapa) equipped with its own kitchen and bar. The Bush Camp is only accessible to Zandspruit residents and guests, and is subject to vacancy. It is the ideal place to gather with neighbors or meet with friends and spend a fantastic day at the swimming pool or evening around a camp fire. If need be, rondavels can be booked for guests who want to spend the night over (subject to vacancy and time notice). Many places of interest are around Mavalo Lodge, several being well known from National Geographic. Among them we will name: - The Cheetah Conservation Project (www.hesc.co.za) - The Khamai Reptile Park - The Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre (www.moholoholo.co.za) - Jessica the hippo (www.jessicahippo.com) : the only wild hippo in the world who likes to interact with humans - The Kapama private game reserve (www.kapama.co.za): Through our hostess Sue, you may book a game drive or an elephant ride on this wonderful reserve. Less than an hour drive from Mavalo Lodge is the Blyde River Canyon, one of the largest green canyons in the world. A drive on that scenic route will grant you breath taking views and the Blyde Canyon Adventure Centre will offer you a host of adrenaline sports : kloofing, abseiling, hot air ballooning, white water rafting and several other activities (www.blydecanyon.co.za). Also an hour's drive away, Orpen Gate welcomes you to the Kruger National Park, the largest game reserve in South Africa. When leaving early from Mavalo Lodge you can easily make a day trip to the Kruger and be home at night (the Kruger's gates close at 6 PM sharp!). Golf enthusiasts will delight in being in the heart of the Lowveld, with no less than four renowned golf courses within an hour's drive (Hans Merensky - Phalaborwa, Tzaneen Country Club, Sabi River Golf Course - Hazyview and White River Country Club), or just in teeing-off at the Drakensig Golf Course, only 15 minutes away (www.drakensiggolfclub.co.za) where you will also find tennis courts. Town: South Africa, Limpopo - Kruger, HoedspruitMavalo Lodge is about 2km from Zandspruit main gate. Once at the entrance, the town of Hoedspruit is only 3km away. Hoedspruit is often described as the 'heart of the Lowveld' as opposed to the Highveld, the mesa where Johannesburg lies, 450km away. The Lowveld is one of the wildest areas of South Africa and is a major tourist attraction for that reason. Many game reserves, among which the famous Kruger National Park, are located around Hoedspruit, making it the ideal departure point for excursions in the South African bush.Hoedspruit has its own airport 15km from downtown. South African Express, a branch of South African Airways, lands at and departs from Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport twice a day in direction of Johannesburg. By car, the 450km trip from Johannesburg takes about 5 hours. 200km are on highways and the rest on national roads, all pleasant and easy to drive on. Hoedspruit is a real safari town that provides all facilities: 2 supermarkets, a medical centre, a dentist, a chemist, 2 petrol stations and several banks. Because lots of visitors stop in Hoedspruit it also offers very attractive safari style boutiques and several nice restaurants.
