Town: Italy, Umbria, Agello
The town\'s name derives from the name of the nymph Agilla, which in mythology is in love with Trasimeno, the son of the god Tirreno (consider also that the term agellus is often used to give the name to countries born out of funds or agricultural colonic).
At the time of the founding dates to the Roman Castrum, on the occasion of the battle against Hannibal (217 BC): thanks to it you could control the pace of Montebuono, then available only connection between Perugia and the western shores of Lake Trasimeno.
The Emperor Henry IV gave the jurisdiction of Agello in Perugia in 1186 and the lords of the place were the Vincioli. They rebuilt and greatly strengthened the country, so as to turn it into Castle (already in the twelfth century it was surrounded by walls). In 1390 Michelozzo Michelotti, rebel Perugia, occupied the castle and made it the basis for incursions into the territory. As a result, the troops of Perugia debellarono the rebels and demolished much of the defenses of the castle.
The fortress and the walls were rebuilt in the late fourteenth century, until the final destruction caused by the Tuscan Grand Duke Ferdinand II in 1642. As a result, the reputation of Agello until the unification of Italy is mainly due to the fact of being considered den of thieves and robbers.
