After the reestablishment of independence, the city was invaded by capitalism with its free market. At the very end of the 20th century, Lithuania’s economy experienced a dynamic upswing. Its best exponent in Vilnius is a right bank of the Neris River, where a business and recreation centre has sprung up. Glass and steel high-rises soared here, housing Lithuanian and foreign companies and firms.†Radisson Blu Hotel Lietuvaâ€, “Holliday Innâ€,†Forum Palaceâ€, a sports and reacreation centre just minutes away. The Municipality of Vilnius moved to this area and gallery of 20th century Lithuanian Art opened its doors. This is a modern European district, the principal square and a shopping mall with a variety of trendy boutiques and restaurants with the name of “Europeâ€. It was inaugurated in 2004 when Lithuania became a member of the Europien Union. 15 min south on foot to the classiest street Gedimino av., 10 min north on foot to Kalvariju Market (must see attraction for everyone who wants a taste of what the rest of country really like).Town: Lithuania, center, VilniusVilnius is charming for visitors and beloved home for its citizens, it has many faces and moods. A city of word famous theatre, music : fact demonstrated by the variety of festivals. A city of greenery: it lies among the hills and unlike many other metropolises, Vilnius is full of greenery, in summer it reposes in the refreshing shade of trees. A city of wonderful Old Town with its churches and narrow streets: buildings lean so close to each other, people lounge in cafes, their legs sprawling across the pavements, eyeing up passers-by. “The Old Town is a picturesque confection of cobbled courtyards, cupolas and a castle. A secret on the brink of being discovered, Vilnius is a miniature gem at the heart of Europe” says the Sunday Times.Sick of the old-town romance? Then cross the White Bridge and you’ll find yourself in the modern Vilnius. Glass and steel buildings popping up near by, traffic whooshes down the wide Konstitucijos av. Listen in cars buzzing, watch skyscraper windows glistening and skaters riding a ramp. Instead of tiny cafes there are glass-fronted where men in costumes waving their briefcases are complimenting each other over lunch. Look to the right: here principal square and shopping mall with a variety of trendy boutiques and restaurants bear the name of “Europe”, look to the left: you’ll see “Arfa”and your “White Vilnius Apartment” just 200 meters away. If you want to see what summer residence of the 19th century looked like come to wooden Vilnius. These villas were built in Zverynas, Antakalnis and Snipiskes. You don’t need look for hardly, just cross Lvovo str. behind Europe Square and go straight down Giedraiciu str. Unfortunately pleasant wooden cottages with carved ornaments, glass verandas and terraces look sad today: sinking into the ground, rotting and patched with rubbish. They are heated with coal, water is taken from hydrants in the street. But houses still preserve the sighns of peaceful and intimate life: sagging tables attract to the shade of abandoned gardens. The wooden Vilnius is a little known part of city’s architecture and it is rapidly perishing so be in hurry to see before it disappears. Maybe you’ll be even lucky and feel the ambience of summer residence of the 19th century? Although most people flock to Vilnius to visit The Old Town there are plenty of other things to see: from different museums, galleries to the Republic of Uzupis (quarter which is called the Monmartre of Vilnius) and the Soviet-era masterpieces such as: a former cinema “Lietuva”, Pylimo str 17; Centre of Contemporary Arts, Vokieciu str; Zaliasis Bridge, National Opera and Ballet Theatre, Vienuolio str.1; Vilnius Palace of Culture and Sports, Rinktines str.1; The Railway Worker’s Culture House, Kauno str. When viewing the city from Gediminas Tower residential districts, which appeared during the Soviet years, are visible only on the horizon. It was once believed that one should never live where one works, thus a places (Virsuliskes, Lazdynai, Justiniskes etc.) where time stops were built. Each of us has/will have his own Vilnius. It is invitation to go forth and discover a Vilnius of your own.
