The Archaeological Park of Cortona includes a series of archaeological sites which are situated inside and outside the urban area. Inside the town we find the Etruscan city walls, the Porta Bifora, some stretches of wall unearthed under the foun-dations of historical buildings like those near Palazzo Cerulli-Diligenti or under Palazzo Casali and the Etruscan barrel vault near Porta Guelfa. Outside of town a series of funerary monuments are visible: the Tumulus of Camucia, the Tumulo I and Tumulo II of Sodo, the Tanella of Pitagora, the Tanella Angori and the Tomb of Mezzavia.
Town: Italy, Tuscany, CortonaApproaching Cortona (494 meters) from the valley floor, one can’t help noting its urban form, spread along the slope of the mountain ridge that separates the Valdichiana from the Valtiberina. The location of the Etruscan city and its importance, evidenced by the scale of its circuit of walls, were due to its strategic position within the road network of the Valdichiana, which was quite fertile even in ancient times. Two major road axes traversed the Valdichiana, connecting Arezzo with Perugia and the Valtiberina with the Tyrrhenian coast; Cortona arose precisely where they crossed. Various myths about its foundation circulated in the fifth century BC, were collected by Herodotus, and further elaborated in the Roman period by Dionysius of Helicarnassus and by Virgil. Recent archaeological studies have clarified the previously uncertain outlines of Etruscan Cortona.
