Location of objectBasilicata, between the heel and toe of Italy, is the least known region of the country. The town of Matera, a short drive away, a UNESCO listed town with its now elegant cave dwellings has featured in several films. The wonderful beaches of Metaponto is an hour\\\'s drive to the south and skiing with the dolomite\\\'s an hour to the west. The region is dotted with interesting medieval villages all with their own holiday festas and traditions going back into the mists of time. Big national parks have their own unique wild life offering wonderful walks. Bari is an hour away, Naples about two hours and Rome close to six. Roads in the area are excellent with Irsina reached by rail and bus.
Town: Italy, Matera, IrsinaThe old centro storico entered through three ancient gates is dominated by its cathedral where the only surviving sculpture of the artist Mantegna was discovered recently, giving a hint of its former importance when this region was the centre of European politics. Ravaged by immigration the town is being revived with returning Italians and a handful of foreigners lovingly restoring the old palazzo and town houses. A way of life lost in most of the rest of Europe still lives on here in the annual wine making, olive oil harvest and making of vast quantities of tomato sauce. Food is unadulterated dominated by the hard wheat grown throughout the region and on which the Roman armies depended when building their empire. Householders sell the produce from their garden on their doorsteps. The smell of foccacio wafts from the bakery three doors down from 6.30 am, the small shops nearby provide all the daily necessities while in the new town adjacent, bright shops and the weekly market offer a variety of goods. Local restaurants and cafes offer sweet treats, the best of Italian coffee and choice cooking. Nearby forests offer seasonal hunting of wild boar and wild vegetables.
