Description of object

The Old Chapel, a beautifully restored 19th century brick and flint former Primitive Methodist chapel located a few miles from the idyllic North Norfolk coast, makes perfect self-catering Norfolk holiday cottage accommodation.

The cottage holds a Four Star rating from the English Tourist Board, and was also recently given a Gold Award for exceptional quality of accommodation and service.

The original character of The Chapel has been preserved, with the main body retained as a dramatic open-plan living area reaching to the heavily-beamed roof; this is overlooked by a mezzanine bedroom accessed by a cast iron spiral staircase. Sleeping accommodation is provided by a king size bed in the mezzanine , supplemented by a double sofabed in the main living area. In winter The Chapel is particularly cosy with a wood burning stove in the corner inglenook fireplace and a very efficient oil-fired modern central heating system, making it an ideal year-round Norfolk holiday cottage.

The bright and airy fitted kitchen has plenty of work surfaces ideal for self-catering, and is equipped with all modern conveniences, including electric hob and oven, microwave, fridge, freezer, dishwasher and other facilities: everything you need for creating great meals from the amazing produce available locally. We’ll even leave a couple of bottles of locally brewed real ale and a pair of the famous Bray’s Cottage Pork Pies in the fridge to get you started.

The roomy modern bathroom is equipped with a WC, sink, shower and washing machine attached.

If the peaceful North Norfolk lifestyle leaves you craving 21st century leisure pursuits, don’t worry. The Old Chapel is equipped with broadband wireless internet access, high definition television and DVD player, internet telephone, and cabling so that you can just plug your iPod into the hifi system. There is also a selection of games and a good collection of books. Comprehensive details about how to get the most from your holiday in the village and the area can be found in the folder on the bookcase.

The accommodation furnishings - including a working harmonium - reflect the building’s origins, and these are enhanced by fittings collected by the owner, a photographer based in Moscow, from his international travels, primarily in Russia, the Former Soviet Union, and Central Asia. The Chapel is also decorated with a small selection of the photographer’s iconic work for various international publications: prints are available for purchase on request.

Outside the south-facing patio garden enjoys uninterrupted views of open fields and Hindolveston Wood. The garden is equipped with a barbeque, table and comfortable seating for outside dining: perfect for communing in the evening with our nearest neighbours, the wild pheasants and barn owls who reside in the adjoining fields.

There is an off-road parking area for two cars.

Location of object

The Old Chapel is the perfect Norfolk holiday cottage from which to explore North Norfolk’s many attractions. With miles of sandy beaches, 81 conservation areas, over 2,000 listed buildings and and 100 scheduled ancient monuments, there’s no shortage of things to see and do. The whole of the North Norfolk coast is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty so there’s far too much to list, but in no particular order here are our top ten, all within 20 miles of the Old Chapel.

• Blakeney. A gem of a fishing village, with its narrow streets of fishermen’s cottages. A high point is a boat trip to Blakeney Point, where seals gather to bask in the sun and gaze at holidaymakers.

• Cley Marshes. The oldest Wildlife Trust reserve in the country has an international reputation as one of the finest bird-watching sites in Britain. As a major transport hub for migrating species it’s nature’s version of Heathrow - except that everything works.

• Holkham Bay. Come to North Norfolk and meet a genuine Hollywood star. The pristine sands of Holkham beach provided the location for the closing scenes of the Oscar-winning “Shakespeare In Love” as the bard struggled with his latest blockbuster “Romeo And Ethel”. This being Hollywood, there’s no evidence that Shakespeare ever actually visited Holkham beach, but you’ll be glad you did.

• Cley-Next-The-Sea. A victim of earlier climate change, this former fishing village ought to be renamed Cley-Some-Distance-From-The-Sea. What’s left today is a near-perfect near-coastal village with character pubs, fine dining and a collection of quality artists’ shops. It’s also home to the Cley Smokehouse, purveyor of the finest smoked fish anywhere.

• Blickling Hall. Now this is our idea of a Norfolk holiday cottage. This National Trust property is one of the finest Jacobean houses in the country, and has a garden to match. Only slightly larger than the Old Chapel, this is your chance to see how the other half used to live.

• Little Walsingham. This medieval village is one of Britain’s most important centres of pilgrimage, and has been voted the most spiritual place in the UK: visit at the right time and you may feel the need to don a cassock to blend in with the crowds. But there’s lots to see here for non-believers, and like all the best places of pilgrimage there are a number of fine hostelries where you can quench your thirst. After which you can relieve yourself in one of Britain’s only Grade One listed public lavatories.

• Wells-Next-The-Sea. A genuine British seaside town, but all in the best possible taste. This is the place to stock up on sticks of rock and Kiss-Me-Quick hats, but afterwards wander out to the woods, sand-dunes, peaceful beach and ponder that eternal question: what is it about the British that makes them spend tens of thousands of pounds on a brightly-coloured beach hut?

• Holt. Residents recently celebrated - yes, really - the 300th anniversary of the Great Fire of Holt, when 1708 Mayday festivities got out of hand and the town was razed to the ground. Proving that every smoke-cloud has a silver lining, the residents then set about building the beautiful Georgian town you see today.

• Norwich. We know you’ve come to the Old Chapel to get away from the city, but Norwich is that rarity, a city you’ll actually want to visit. Compact enough to stroll around, this beautiful medieval city boasts two cathedrals, a castle, a world-class art gallery and extensive retail therapy opportunities. It’s also the first British city to have its entire centre wireless-enabled. So if you’re very sad you can just sit on a park bench with your laptop and check your email.

• Pensthorpe Nature Reserve. Host to the BBC’s Springwatch, this multi award-winning reserve promises to get you “up close and personal” with the local wild-life.

North Norfolk’s policy on road signs, which is largely to have no road signs at all, means that you’ll almost certainly get lost at some point en route from your Norfolk holiday cottage to our top ten. But it doesn’t matter: wherever you lose yourself in North Norfolk, it’s bound to be interesting, beautiful and an enhancement to your holiday.

Town: Great Britain and Northern Ireland, North Norfolk, Hindolveston

This Norfolk holiday cottage is located on the edge of the unspoiled village of Hindolveston, nestling in the North Norfolk countryside midway between the market town of Fakenham and the Georgian town of Holt, and nine miles from the famed North Norfolk coast.

Hindolveston is a small traditional Norfolk village with a thriving community and an ancient history. The Domesday Book of 1086 describes it as providing accommodation for 3 slaves, 2 horses, 20 cattle, 40 pigs, 40 goats and 2 beehives. The slaves have gone, but the rest of the livestock remain - the 2 horses are still in the field neighbouring the cottage - and after almost a thousand years the village has expanded to provide two farm shops, one in the same lane as The Old Chapel, supplying the freshest of country produce for your day to day needs.

There is a pub and shop in the neighbouring village of Foulsham, and we are only six miles from Fakenham, Reepham and the excellent Georgian shopping town of Holt. The latter (and indeed the other towns) are still lucky enough to have superb independent butchers and greengrocers as well as unobtrusive supermarkets for the more mundane things!

During the year there are various arts events put on by village residents. In the spring, autumn and winter on the third Saturday of the month the Village Hall is transformed into a cinema - the programme of films will be available at The Old Chapel. On Friday evenings throughout the year there is a bar in the Village Hall, where you can enjoy the local ales and the occasional live folk music session.

There are a number of interesting walks in the immediate vicinity of your Norfolk holiday cottage through the local fields and woods, and the village provides wonderfully secluded self-catering holiday accommodation from which to explore North Norfolk’s many attractions.
