We had a wonderful 5 days at Alpenrose. My wife and I are both over 65, so our introduction to Alpenrose was a bit scary. Alpenrose is about a 10 minute walk up a steep road from Grengiols, which is itself well above the teeny train station. But Anneliese and Ignaz (and their whole family - tres charmant) were super.
GRENGIOLS = very pretty, very quiet, very nice. All the people we met were helpful and friendly. The ladies in the grocery store (and Tourism Office) helped us with groceries and wine and cheese. The local cheese, by the way is Incredibly good. The elderly lady who runs the restaurant (recommended by Ignaz) was well worth the visit - good food, pleasant atmosphere, cold beer, and a couple of local patrons helped us translate our English to German. Jawohl. BettmerAlp, RiederAlp, Oberwald, Brig, all within easy/fast train from Grengiols station. Zermatt, Spiez and Interlaken within an hour or two train ride through very beautiful country. We did not rent an auto, but it was very easy to get around wherever we wanted to go by train and/or bus.
ALPENROSE = a nice apartment with beautiful views out of almost every window. A nicely equipped kitchen, very functional. Living room was super - TV, WiFi, DVD player, wood-burning stove (additional wood for the stove \"Magically\" appeared on our doorstep each day), mood lighting. Lovely walks everywhere, right from the front door, through flower covered hillsides. We ended several of our day trips by sitting on the courtyard or in the backyard, enjoying the views while having a bit of cheese, some sausage and a glass (or two?) of wine.
ANNELIESE & IGNAZ = the best part of the whole vacation. Very interesting and friendly people who, along with their whole family, and even the other nearby villagers, are super! Anneliese was happy to drive us to&from the train station, picked up the heavy groceries we had bought in Grengiols so we wouldn\'t have to carry them uphill (We did carry our important items - Wine & Cheese, HaHa) and made our stay incredibly enjoyable. Merci, Danke, Gracias, Thank You. We had a teeny problem with the WiFi (occasionally it would drop my connection) which Anneliese got fixed right away.
One of our best vacations ever. We loved it, and hope to come back sometime to enjoy it again.
