Morocco -> Essaouira

The Owner of 'APARTMENT' says about ESSAOUIRA
Essaouira Essaouira lies on the Atlantic coast, 100 miles from Marrakech. It takes its name - 'town of little ramparts' from the impressive fortifications left by its Portugese founders. The unique charm of this town rests in the harmonious blend of its many different aspects; its moderate climate and superb beach, its working harbour and thuya wood workshops, its numerous souks and craft shops, its local artists and gnaoua musicians. Essaouira is a beautiful, unique and relaxed town. It has sunshine and bright blue skies nearly all year round. It is a popular destination for windsurfers, surfers, artists, musicians, independant travellers and families and is very up and coming. There are many local festivals, masses of culture and tradition and fine restaurants. It has a rustic feel of simplicity and has retained its charm with its fusion of beach life, the traditional and daily life in the old medina, excellent cuisine and an easy friendliness with the local people. An excellent
The Owner of 'Dar Qawi' says about ESSAOUIRA
Essaouira is a very picturesque little fishing town on the Atlantic coast of Morocco, just over two hours drive from Marrakech or Agadir. It has in turn been a Portuguese colony called Mogador, an important trading link between Timbuktu and Europe and a French protectorate. In the 1960s, it was 'discovered' by Jimi Hendrix, the Rolling Stones and other musicians, artists and hippies who all succumbed to its charm. Nowadays this pretty little village in an entirely white and blue colour scheme, is popular with chic French families, Brits, Germans, Scandinavians and Italians with a smattering of Americans who own houses there and who enjoy the laid back vibe, the mild weather and the friendly ambience. English people often describe it as an Arabic version of Rock in Cornwall whilst the French insist that it is like an African St.Tropez 50 years ago!

The Owner of 'Riad Anassouira' says about ESSAOUIRA
The city, formerly called Mogador by the Portuguese who in the 16th century built the actual fortress, is a charming mid-sized seaside town with a very lively port. Situated just outside the old city walls, it is teeming with activity: fishing boats going and coming, fishermen repairing their boats and their nets, selling their fish etc. All through the day, you can buy freshly caught fish, raw or cooked, in one of the little stalls that border the sea. One thing you never tire of is strolling through the Moroccan markets, the famous “Souks” where you can buy all sorts of handicraft, spices and other food stock. In Essaouira you have got all kinds of Souks: the Fish Market, the Spice Market, the Handicraft Markets where you can find all kinds of clothes and leather goods and a lot of wood marquetery using the wood of the Thuja tree, a kind of local cedar. Before leaving Essaouira, don’t forget to visit one of the local Hamams (the Moroccan version of the Turkish
The Owner of 'Riad Remmy' says about ESSAOUIRA

Essaouira,formerly known as Mogador, is an ancient port on the Atlantic coast, two hours west of Marrakech.
In 2001, the medina of Essaouira was awarded world heritage status by UNESCO. With its bustling fishing port, relaxed and friendly atmosphere, Essaouira is a town which lives up to its name, Es-Saouira, “the beautifully designed”.
Artists, writers, poets and painters are spellbound by the magic. The unspoiled, serene atmosphere makes it seem like time stands still. Essaouira has many treasures simply waiting to be discovered in its narrow alleyways behind the walled medina. It is a jewel in the heart of Morocco.
The Owner of 'Dar les Sirenes' says about ESSAOUIRA
âUntil recently Marrakech got all the attention, but today Essaouira is increasingly the favourite destination of elite European travellers to Morocco. The cosmopolitan atmosphere of the UNESCO heritage “white city”, 170 km from ‘red’ Marrakech, which has a pleasant climate even at the height of summer thanks to a constant wind – the taros – from the sea, has always been the amor fou of sophisticated travellers. It used to be a mecca for alternative tourism, for hippies and surfers, but today it is filled with international bon vivants: actors like Mel Gibson and designers like Philippe Starck, who come to discover the blue and white city overlooking the Atlantic. Within the fortified walls that enclose the medina, the atmosphere of peace and freedom recalls the Bohemian period of ‘60s, when it became an enclave for artists like Jimi Hendrix, William Burroughs, Frank Zappa, Bob Marley, Pasolini and Orson Welles, who filmed scenes from “Othello...
