The Owner of 'Elegant & Spectacular Apartment in Buenos Aires City, Argent' says about Buenos Aires City |
Barracas is a name that comes from the word 'barraca', which is a precarious construction made out of very simple materials typically used for housing labourers.
During the 19th century Barracas was the area where the wealthiest families of Argentina resided. But in the end of the century when the yellow fever came to Buenos Aires the people fled and moved to other places, what is now the northern neighbourhoods, transforming the city completely. Something similar also took place in San Telmo. Immigrants, especially Italians but also from many other places, started to populate the area, turning it into a working class neighborhood. It was filled with 'cafetines' (small coffee houses) with a bad reputations, being places where all kinds of crooks used to hide. Despite this it was a prosperous area of the City of Buenos Aires with factories, markets and highways. |
