Description of object

The manor house at Quinta da Lapa is nearly 300 years old, it was restred anew while keeping it’s original architectural features.

The estate produces craft wines under the brand “Quinta da Lapa” in the wine region that’s known as Tejo.

It has 10 suites with complete bathrooms, a grand dining room, state rooms and lounges, a chapel and a party hall. The house is built around a big rectangular inner court with an imposing tri-centennial tree in the middle.

You can stroll around the fields, use the pool house amid the vineyards, visit the winery, taste wines, visit other estates in the area, or simply relax in the quietness and privacy of the inner court.

Location of object

This landmark estate is part of the region’s Wine Route and is located 70 km north of Lisbon and just 24 km away from Santarém, the gothic capital of Portugal.

Town: Portugal, Grande Lisboa, Manique do Intendente

Places to See:

Santarém (24 km)

Praça Barão da Batalha (Batalha’s Baron Square)
This square is one of Abrantes’ most popular spots and has become a favourite meeting point for visitors due to its dynamic commerce and constant liveliness – aspects that make this location one of the most attractive in the city.

Jardim do Castelo (The Castle Garden)

Best known as the ‘Flower City’, the lovely city of Abrantes owes its nickname to this garden – an enchanting space that still retains the beauty and charm of its past. This garden is an idyllic spot to enjoy relaxing leisure moments.

Fortaleza de Abrantes (Abrantes Fortress)

The fortress’ intriguing blend of architectural styles is a result of the countless military occupations that occurred in the district between 1173 and the second half of the 20th Century. One of the structure’s most dominant features is its keep, a tall tower commanding rare, panoramic views of the Ribatejo, Alentejo and Beira regions.

Igreja Matriz e Capela Dolmen (St. Mary Madeleine Church and Dolmen Chapel)

This religious monument is primarily visited for its unique, lateral chapel – an impressive dolmen (megalithic tomb) considered to be one of the ten largest in the Iberian Peninsula. Believed to have inspired the construction of the church, this megalithic chapel has become an important monument in the country.

Rio Maior Salt Pans - 21 km

These salt pans are located in the foothills of the Candeeiros mountain range, surrounded by trees, vineyards and farmland. Located in an open-air space that resembles a small village because of its cobblestone passageways and wooden houses, the salt pans are situated 18 miles (30 kilometres) from the sea. Long ago, the range was flooded by the ocean, leaving fossils scattered around the whole area. Salt is produced between the months of July–September – the perfect time for your visit. Throughout the years, there has been little change in the traditional methods used in Rio Maior’s salt production process, making it especially unique.

Caldas da Rainha (38 km)

This is the area where Queen D Leonor used to come and enjoy the healthy benefits of a unique thermal spring. In fact the name Caldas da Rainha is a legacy of this queen.

In the late 15th century Queen D Leonor issued a command for the construction of a hospital near the site of the Caldas da Rainha spring. This medical facility was built in 1484 and is now known as the world’s oldest thermal spring hospital.

While Caldas da Rainha continues to be famous for its wonderful thermal waters you can enjoy many other features that this region has to offer. Art, history and nature are all attractions for visitors who travel to Caldas da Rainha.

A trip to Parque Termal is a chance to explore many of the region’s outdoor grounds but you can also go to the Jose Malhoa Museum which is a prime attraction in Caldas da Rainha. This museum is home to a number of art works by 19th and 20th century Portuguese artists.

Another mainstay of Caldas da Rainha is the city’s ceramics industry. This flourishing business has made the region a prominent name that is well respected among ceramic experts and collectors. The high quality clay that is so abundant was one of the reasons that artisans and companies flocked to this area. Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro was a popular clay artist during the 1800s and he is credited with the founding of one of the most famous ceramics factory in Caldas da Rainha. One of the places that visitors often stop to tour is the Museu de Ceramica which features many of Pinheiro’s best works.

Fátima Sanctuary (77 km)

Fátima is undoubtedly the most revered pilgrimage site in the country, visited by people from all over the world in the name of ‘Faith, Life and Hope.’ This town is believed to be the place where the three shepherd children, Jacinta, Lúcia and Francisco, saw the Virgin Mary holding white rosary beads in Her hand and who asked them to pray against Evil. Nowadays, Fátima receives thousands of faithful pilgrims every year, especially on the 13th of May – an annual pilgrimage day. On these occasions, followers of the ‘Way to the Cross’ pilgrimage are led to 14 chapels – each one evoking the stages of the ‘Passion of Christ.’ This walk begins at the Santa Teresa de Ourém roundabout, leads to the ‘Valinhos’ monument (where the fourth apparition took place) and ends at the ‘Calvary’, having passed through the ‘Angel’s Cave’ (site where the Angel of Peace appeared twice to the shepherd children, in the spring and autumn of 1916).

Ourém Castle (88 km)
This castle is a fine example a beautiful medieval hamlet. Surrounded by walls, this grandiose monument sits at the top of a hill, just 2 kilometres from the town centre. To enter the castle you must access the ‘Portas da Vila’ (the original city gates).

Peniche - 64 km

Fort of Peniche
Once a prison for political opponents to the dictatorship, the fort was transformed in a monument to freedom. The visit still allows the feeling of the severe conditions of the prisoners, and the trauma of listening to a lively life so close, from the other side of the walls, and being kept so confined and watched.

The Fortaleza
These days a museum with mix of local archeology, natural history and craft displays and special exhibitions it is still possible to see the old cells and solitary confinement pens of the sixteenth century fortress which also served as a jail for political prisoners of the dictator Salazar through the 1950s and 60s.
Open Tues to Sunday till 6pm, closes at 5pm in winter.

Berlengas
Peniche is the usual and best starting point to a trip to Berlengas (Nazaré and S. Martinho do Porto are, also, possible starting points, but without commercial carriers, so, unless you have a friend with a boat, you must leave from Peniche).
The biggest and most used boat is the popular \\\'Cabo Avelar Pessoa\\\' that you have to book in advance with Viamar - Tel. 262 785646.

There are some alternatives with fishing boats (smaller and not so regular) of Nautipesca (tel. 91 7588358) or Berlenga Turpesca (tel. 262 789960) and others.

Well integrated with Peniche, here and there seeming the last point of Carvoeiro, Berlengas are almost one hour distant, and the trip uses to be very emotive, due to the high waves in front of the Carvoeiro cape.

I surely recommend the trip, but, don\\\'t forget, prepare it in advance: to protect the park the accesses are limited to a daily maximum, and in high season the boat is usually full (in winter there is no boat, and, in the other days... the sea decides!

Foz do Arelho Beach - 50 km

Batalha Monastery (64 km)
In 1385, King João I vowed that if his outnumbered army defeated the Castilians at the important Battle of Aljubarrota, he would build a magnificent monastery dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The king was victorious, resulting in the independence of Portugal from Spain and the great Batalha Monastery.

King João I gave the monastery to the Dominicans and the splendid edifice was constructed over the next two centuries in the Gothic and Manueline styles. Along with all other monasteries in Portugal, Batalha was dissolved in 1834.

Batalha Monastery was added to UNESCO\\\'s World Heritage List in 1983 because it commemorates an important historical event and \\\'here a highly original, national Gothic style evolved, profoundly influenced by Manueline art, as demonstrated by its masterpiece, the Royal Cloister.\\\'
