If you want to speed through Ireland in a frenetic race to “see Ireland” Weirs is probably not for you. BUT if you want to get to know Ireland as Yeats described it and to better understand Irish, then Weirs is a “don’t miss” destination. Weirs is not simply a business it’s a passion of its owners
This wonderful pub/restaurant is tucked into an Irish countryside; the type immortalized often by W.B. Yeats in his poems. The accommodations behind the pub have been designed with the comfort of the traveler in mind and are very welcoming. During our stay there it was very easy to return from a days outing and feel we were “home.” But home is not a building, it’s people, and Pat Weirs and his lovely wife Una go to extraordinary lengths to make their guests feel “like family.” We felt privileged to be accepted into their lives if even for a brief period. One can only leave hearing the sounds and voices of Ireland “in the deep hearts core.”
The natural warmth exuded from the wood of the pub and its furniture is complemented daily with a cast of characters that one might see visiting from a Joyce novel. Sharing a pint (or two) with “real” Irish for a few nights left us with an awe and respect for this country too often inappropriately stereotyped. While we ate at several restaurants on our travels, Weirs’ dinners were, hands down, the best and that includes Dublin. We understand fully why the restaurant was awarded the Best Gastro Pub award last year.
