Jämsä is a town and municipality of Finland. It is located in the province of Western Finland and is part of the Central Finland region. The municipality has a population of 22,392 (28 February 2013)[2] and covers an area of 1,823.91 square kilometres (704.22 sq mi) of which 252.57 km2 (97.52 sq mi) is water.[1] There are all together even 465 lakes in Jämsä. Largest lakes are Päijänne, Koljonselkä and Lake Kuorevesi.[6] The population density is 14.25 inhabitants per square kilometre (36.9 /sq mi)
The Himos holiday resort originated in 1984, when Juhani Ojala and Päivi Kuokkanen founded and constructed the slopes of Himos Ski Resort. Lake Päijänne (Finnish pronunciation: [ˈpæi(j)ænːe]) is the second largest lake in Finland (1,080 km2 (266,874 acres)). Päijänne is a famous boating, canoeing and sailing attraction. The 119 km long lake is connected by canals to Lake Keitele, Lake Vesijärvi and to Lake Ruotsalainen. Length of the open waterway for ships is 380 km. The Clear and Drinkable Lake Päijänne South Association won a Tourism and Environment award presented by the European Union Commission in 1995.[14] |
