Town: Greece, Skyros Island (aka Skiros), Skyros islandSkyros is the largest of the four islands in the Sporades group. Skyros is the most southerly of the Sporades and lies of the east coast of Evia, just 24 nautical miles from the port of Kymi. Skyros is linked to both Evia and the mainland via a daily ferry service to Kymi.
Skyros, with its strategic position in the middle of the Aegean, has been known since time immemorial. Those who controlled Skyros controlled the trade routes to Asia Minor, mainland Greece and the kingdoms of Italy. Skyros is mentioned in the writings amongst others of Homer, Pliny and Sophocles. In mythology Skyros was the ancestral home of Theseus and it is said that Achilles spent his early youth living in the women’s quarters of King Lykomedes’ palace, the King of Skyros. The small natural harbour of Achilli is from where Achilles set sail for Troy.
\'Chorio\' is the main town of Skyros. Most people approaching Chorio from the port of Linaria will be faced by a blank deserted mountain side. As a defensive measure Chorio was deliberately built on the land-facing side of the hillside so that it wasn’t visible from the sea and marauding pirates. Originally all the houses were built out of hewn rock so that they blended in with the hillside. Irrespective of social class, everyone lived in simple one-room houses and to display social standing they were intricately furnished with hand-carved furniture, embroidery, ceramics and brass ware. The small size of the houses called for the furniture to be constructed in miniature, giving the appearance of a dolls house.
