Town: Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Somerset, WellsSituated in the heart of Somerset, Wells is the smallest cathedral city in England. It caters for most everyday needs, offering good shopping facilities as well as restaurants and pubs, a cinema, churches of most denominations, together with open-air markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Wells is also beginning to make a name for itself as a film location. The most recent productions which have been filmed here are Hot Fuzz (just premiered in the West End) and a second film about Queen Elizabeth 1st called The Golden Age starring Cate Blanchett and due for release in October 2007.
Wells is an ideal base for touring with Wookey Hole Caves, Cheddar Gorge, Glastonbury, Regency Bath, Bristol and the seaside resort of Weston-Super-Mare all in close proximity. For those who like to get some exercise there is excellent walking in the nearby Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (the West Mendip Way starts just half a mile from St Thomas Mews) with cycling and bird watching on the Somerset Levels. Sporting facilities in the area include racing at Wincanton and Bath, golf at Wells and near Oakhill, sailing or fishing at Chew Valley and Blagdon lakes.
