It is within a short drive of the ancient village of Santillana del Mar, Comillas and ofcourse the city.When in Santander city centre, wide tree-lined boulevards with street cafes, elegant plazas, and beautiful public parks and gardens all combine to give a distinctly welcoming feel from the very first moment you arrive.Out on the town: A huge choice of restaurants and bars mean that you will never be at a loss for somewhere new to socialize. Much of the regional cuisine centres around the plentiful supply of freshly caught seafood, plus of course, there are many tapas bars. Nightlife can be as lively and late as you like, with many places staying open until daybreak. Beaches galore: Numerous beautifully sandy beaches surround Santander, some sheltered with calm waters, others are more open with conditions ideal for surfing. El Sardinero, just one and a half miles from the city centre, is the beach most people head for, but there are others nearby that are rarely crowded even during the peak months. Close to El Sardinero is the city’s grand casino, which with its elegant white façade could easily have come straight from a James Bond novel.Shopping choices in Santander range from the elegant city centre boutiques to the Eroski,Carrefour and El Corte Ingles inspired malls just outside the centre. The Hipercor mall is one of the largest of it's kind in Spain.

A number of fascinating museums (including one that brings Santander’s rich maritime history vividly to life), two zoos, a planetarium, and a dynamic arts centre are just the start. Markets are held almost every day, giving a taste of traditional Spain, and the opportunity of some genuine bargains, particularly in leather goods. Also, make a point of visiting the Peninsula de la Magdalena. Quite apart from the stunning views over Santander Bay, you’ll also be able to enjoy the exotic gardens, some fine examples of ancient ships, a small zoo featuring polar bears, and the magnificent Magdalena Palace. Built in 1912, this was the summer residence of King Alfonso XIII, whose patronage set the seal on Santander’s popularity as a holiday resort for the Spanish nobility.
