Description of objectMaison Grillou is a lovingly restored 200 year old Pyrenean fermette - a collection of stone buildings surrounded by woodland and its own 2 acres of natural gardens, where nothing disturbs the silence except the sound of bird song and the occasional cow bell from the valley below ... a very special rural retreat for couples. Take advantage of off peak flights and arrive and depart on any day; minimum stay just 3 nights, all year.
L'Atelier d'Artiste is a spacious (110m2), light and airy gite over two levels, created from a former barn at one end of the long main building, restored using eco-friendly methods and materials, and full of charm and character. You'll enjoy lots of comfortable places to sit, read and eat, a kitchen equipped with everything you'll need to cook with our great local produce, a private garden and 2 terraces. This is a gite holiday with the hard work taken out: breakfast is included, and if you choose, dinner is available 3 times a week - the best of both worlds!
Downstairs, there's a large open plan living/eating/cooking area. The sitting area with squashy sofa and armchairs and a dining area with table and four chairs both seat four people in comfort, so you'll never want for space. The open kitchen has oak units and worktops, a four ring gas hob, full size electric oven, fridge with freezer, washing machine and dishwasher. It's been designed by cooks for cooks, so you\'ll find plenty of good pans and utensils, sharp knives, gadgets, kettle, espresso machine, hand blender, toaster, cook books plus simple but stylish white crockery and decent glasses. The kitchen is stocked for your arrival with a supply of basic foodstuffs, dishwasher tablets, and all sorts of environment friendly cleaning materials.
Upstairs there's a huge, triple aspect, cathedral ceilinged space for sleeping and sitting, with gives great views over the surrounding hillsides and woodland. The sitting area has a sofa, a mini-TV and a combined hi-fi/DVD player/iPod dock. The sleeping area has a king size (160cm by 200cm) double bed and the usual storage for clothes and incidentals.
The adjacent bathroom has a tiled XXL shower big enough for 2, and enough space to lounge around and relax. Toiletries and hairdryer are provided.
Large French doors lead directly out into the gardens; there's a gravelled terrace with small table and chairs right outside, and a larger, private dining terrace with table, four chairs and parasol a few steps away. You'll have your own garden area with sun loungers and parasol, plus access to the rest of the grounds where there are plenty of other places to sit and lounge in sun and shade. A barbecue is available. There's a covered dining area in one of the other barns where we often serve breakfast and dinner. The grounds run off into woodland all around and are completely unfenced. Don't come expecting manicured lawns and immaculate borders - we work organically and take much inspiration from permaculture, and work with nature rather than trying to tame it. You'll find ancient oak trees, natural rockery, fruit trees, and an organic potager, and you'll be disturbed only by the sound of bird song and the occasional cow bell in the valley below.
Location of objectYou may never have stumbled upon Ariège-Pyrénées; most people haven't. It's a hidden gem - the 'other' south of France, a rural department with just six main towns, many small villages and hamlets, some of the most stunning scenery in France and a surprisingly lively and alternative cultural scene including some of France's best summer festivals. The area is fantastic for walking, with endless well-marked paths for all levels; for cycling; for birding; for photography and painting; for exploring local markets and food producers; or just for chilling with a picnic by a river or at one of the mountain cols with fantastic views right into Spain and Andorra. We're right in the centre of the natural park, in green rolling foothills just a few kilometres from the high peaks, and with easy access to pretty much anywhere in the department within less than an hour.
Town: France, Parc Naturel Régional des Pyrénées Ariégeoises, RimontLost in the woods almost at the end of a forest track, you'll see no other houses ... but we're just 3km from our nearest village, Rimont, which has a boulangerie, épicerie, bars and various artisan food producers. 15 minutes away is the lively town of St Girons, with one of the best markets in the department every Saturday; 25 minutes in the other direction is the medieval 'capital' of Ariège, Foix.
