Town: Greece, Samos Vineyards, KarlovassiOn the rim of the famed Icarian Sea, lies the island of Samos. With an area of 475 sq.km. and a population of some 35,000 inhabitants it is the largest of the north-eastern Aegean islands. The island\\\'s large size, diverse geology and important geopolitical position have ensured that Samos offers its visitors diversity, a long and interesting history, and is easily accessible. Lying on the north-eastern edge of the Aegean sea, some 175 nautical miles from Athens, yet only a few kilometers off the shores of Asia Minor, Samos boasts 160 kilometers of coasts with long, pure-white sandy beaches and small fishing harbors, as well as many picturesque inland villages. Easily accessible by plane and ferry – Samos sits just a kilometre or so off the coast of Turkey, the mountains across the Mykali straits providing a spectacular backdrop to most of the north eastern part of the island. The southern most of the North East Aegean Islands and just north of the Dodecanese, Samos is a great base for island hopping - although there is of course lots to do on the island itself. It was the birthplace of Pythagoras, the site of the ancient Temple of Hera. The Efpalinos Tunnel – an engineering marvel from the time of Polykrates – deserves a look. The house is metres from the Archaeological Museum in Samos, the many picturesque villages sorrounding our vineyard, their cafes their restaurnats and small shops and their squares, the Karlobassi fisherman\\\'s port and Potami and Roditses beaches. Uncommon for the Aegean, Samos is a green island. Mountain pine forests and vineyards provide a cool green retreat on hot summer days and some outstanding hiking for those with the energy. The island\\\'s two striking mountain ranges are linked by forest roads, offering breathtaking views of the Aegean through the pine forests. Karlobasi, only a short drive from our vineyard, is a lively port with a number of traditional Greek tavernas and fish restaurants as well as shops, banks, and a medical center. Cafes line the old harbor where one can idle time away sipping an iced-coffee or an ouzo. Karlobasi nightlife is vibrant, especially in the summer season. The beach life is a big part of the local lifestyle, and can be best sampled at Potami beach, any time of the day.
