Description of objectQuinta do Rio is a large, beautifully restored Quinta, with direct access to the river Mondego. A secluded flower garden and further hectares of age-old terraces surround the house, there are no neighbours. It has a large private swimmingpool and a separate children’s pool, with beautiful views of the valley. The house, traditionally built with large granite stones, consists of a spacious livingroom with a great open fire, a fully equipped kitchen with dishwasher, 4 bedrooms for 8 people. 2 Bathrooms with bath and toilet. In the basement is a large room, great for kids/youngsters, and a shower and a toilet. On the covered terrace is a traditional breadoven and barbecue. Small children’s play-area. The house has its own clean and healthy drinking water source, besides tapwater. It is situated at the end of our private dirt road, in the midst of natural beauty and agricultural terraces.
Location of objectDominio Vale do Mondego is a working organic farm, situated directly near the river Mondego, in de Serra da Estrela , the largest Nature Park of Portugal. The estate consists of 6 Quinta’s (authentic Portuguese farms), comprising 33,3 ha with pastures, wood, olive groves, orchards and vegetable and fruit gardens. We have a large flock of sheep, horses and a donkey. A private dirt road leads to the estate, which is beautifully situated in a green, lush valley with broad terraces.
A Dutch familie, with their 3 children, aged 4 – 17, live here permanently. Eelco is longstanding expert on bio-dynamic agriculture, besides he is a keen nature-lover and takes guests on nature walks on the estate. Karin takes care of the guests and organises cultural activities and the open air Atelier. Almost daily a family-diner is served on the large terrace with a beautiful view over the valley.
Quinta do Rio is one of 3 Quintas which is for rent. We also have 2 Cabanas for Bed & Breakfast and a small rural campsite.
Town: Portugal, Valley of the river Mondego, Faia, GuardaThe Quinta is located at 1 km from the small mediaeval village of Faia. It only has a tiny cafe. 5 km further there is the village of Porto do Carne with a shop and local restaurant.The highest city of Portugal, Guarda is at a distance of 12 km. It has a historic centre, many bars and restaurants, large supermarket, very good theatre and local museum. The region is famous for its nature walks and historic villlages.
A small shop at the Dominio sells our organic products from the garden and small organic groceries like wine, rice, pasta, jams, bread juices etc.

Additional InformationThe farm has a large flock of the typical Serra da Estrela sheep (160 in total). In our own dairy we make the famous Serra da Estrela cheese. There are about 1500 olivetrees on the Estate, from which a tasty, healthy Extra Virgin olive-oil is produced. Organic vegetables and fruit are also grown in our gardens and for sale. Besides the Quinta do Rio we have 2 more houses renovated as holiday homes, 2 rooms and a small rural campsite. We have several animals like a donkey, dogs, cats, rabbits, chickens, ducks, geese and doves. There are great walks on the Domain, along a centuries old path with historic waterbasins. For children it is great to walk with the donkey. For fanatic walkers the Serra da Estrela region has many long distance walking trails. With our Landrover we can drop you off in the middle of the park. The river with an abundance of water and its pebble beach is great for swimming and fishing. |
