Description of objectVals le Chastel is a tiny village on the edge of the Natural Park of the Livradois Forez, situated at an elevation of 500m and surrounded by the wooded hills of the Haute Loire – the most southerly department of the Auvergne. This is an area almost untouched by tourism, and as yet virtually undiscovered by the British.
The house is of typical Auvergnat construction, with thick walls to keep it cool in the summer, and completely restored to add modern comfort to ancient charm. Outside the garden offers a wonderful view over the castle, and from here it is only a very short walk to the banks of the Doulon river, a beautiful spot where you can paddle - it’s even deep enough in some parts to swim.
Location of objectThis is wonderful walking and cycling country – the general rule is that you can ramble anywhere that isn’t specifically signposted as private. There are scores of walk leaflets and books on the shelves in the dining area, with suggested routes varying in distance and difficulty - for the most part ‘balisage’ (waymarking) is pretty good. The PR 410 (Petite Randonée) route goes through the village.
Cycling, both road and off road (or ‘VTT’ in France) is also excellent, with many existing trails close by. Similarly to rambling, off road cycling means almost anywhere within reason as long as it’s done sensibly and with consideration to other people’s property.
For the more intrepid, the Gorges d’Allier is within a very short drive, with rock-climbing and white-water rafting and canoeing on offer. For a more sedate view, the tourist train from Langeac takes the scenic route down the whole length of the gorge.
For experienced fishermen, 1st and 2nd category rivers flow through the Haute-Loire, running through the most contrasting scenery of gorges and plains, with 24 species of fish from the rare salmon (although currently protected), to the trout . Fishing permits are required and are available from the tourist office in nearby Brioude. The River Doulon, which flows through Vals, is itself a 1st category river and which, within only a short drive, leads into the Gorges d’Allier.
Winter brings a whole new perspective with both alpine and Nordic skiing available within an hour’s drive from Vals. There are several excellent resorts, such as Le Lioran, Les Estables and Super Besse to name but a few; and for those who want to try something a little different – try a snow-shoe or dog sled tour!
Town: France, Brioude, BrioudeThere are stunning villages to explore: Lavaudieu (officially classified as one of France’s most beautiful villages),
There are no shops in the village but the bread van does come twice a week! If you can’t wait that long, small amounts of groceries can be brought in Domeyrat (3kms), the nearest supermarket is in the small town of Paulhaguet (7kms). More choice and larger shops can be found in the lovely town of Brioude (10kms).
The 12th century church with it's medieval frescos is worth a visit. The key can be found in the house next door to the church
Chaise-Dieu with it’s music festival, and the old city of Le Puy en Velay with it’s buildings set atop the lava cores of ancient volcanoes. Still on the volcanic theme, the Auvergne’s major tourist attraction, Vulcania, is about an hour’s drive away and close to Clermont Ferrand.
