Town: Italy, Marche, AmandolaWhere to go, what to do The River Tenna, which flows from the Sibillini Mountains to the sea, is home to otters and trout within a fifteen to twenty minute stroll from our B&B. In the spring, the river is dammed to form the San Rufino Lake segment of the Sibillini National Park. For walkers and trail bike riders, the Sibillini Mountains offer a series of graded and well signposted trails that can be accessed via the ancient fortress town of Amandola, the National Park’s north-eastern gateway – a six minute drive from us. Amandola, which dates from 1248, now has a population of 4,000. Its tiny La Fenice theatre is well worth visiting, as are the town’s churches and religious art. The friendliness of Amandola’s people is legendary, and they delight in welcoming visitors to their town. To the south east, the city of Ascoli Piceno’s is about 50 minutes away by car. Ascoli is a ‘must-visit’ destination because of its opulent travertine marble city centre, and the drama and pageantry of the city’s stunning Quintana festival. Much closer to Amandola is Caldarola’s historic medieval castle and museum, both well worth the 30 km drive. Most visitors are surprised to hear that the largely unknown and predominantly rural Le Marche region is actually a cultural treasure trove. In fact, per head of population, the area has more museums than any other part of Italy.
