Town: Portugal, Costa Da Caparica, Costa Da Caparica

This beautiful apartment is located in the Caparica Coast (Costa da Caparica), 28 seconds from the beach and 30 minutes from beautiful Lisboa.

Costa da Caparica belongs to the Almada council, located on the south bank of the river Tagus where magnificent sandy beaches stretch south for nearly 30 kilometres from Caparica to Cabo Espichel. Big areas of eucalyptus, pine-trees and acacia-trees spread along the white, fine sands. But Costa da Caparica is more than beaches and huge areas of white sands, although this is the first thing you'll remember when you think of it.

Costa da Caparica also holds a market between Tuesdays and Sundays where fishermens wives and farmers cry out their products There are exquisite fish restaurants where you can taste fresh and unusual dishes and beach cafes with all night animation.

On the cliff above the beach with its brightly-coloured sardine boats, stands an old Capuchin Monastery originally founded in 1558.

During the summer months, you can hire a small tent on the beach to get some shadow when the temperatures are too high or take a ride on an open-carriage railway that runs for 10 km along the beaches of the Costa da Caparica.

With 30 kilometres of sand, sea and sky, Costa da Caparica is Europe’s largest beach and is only half an hour from Lisbon, on the southern bank of the River Tagus.

Join the inhabitants of Lisbon, who come to the Costa da Caparica every summer to sunbathe and swim in the sea. Share the lively atmosphere of the bars and café terraces that stretch all along the seafront.

But don’t think that the beach is just somewhere you go in the summer. On sunny winter days - and Portugal has lots of these - you can remind yourself of the pleasures of the summer season, strolling along the promenade, paddling in the sea and breathing in the fresh sea breeze.

The backdrop to the beach is the protected landscape of an impressive fossil cliff. This was the water line millions of years ago. Lying hidden at the top of the cliff is the charming Convento dos Capuchos, built in the 16th century. Ringed by carefully kept gardens, a lively Music Festival is held here every summer, while the convent offers you an excellent view over the beach.

To the south of this protected landscape, separated from the beach by a line of dunes, is the Lagoa de Albufeira, a lagoon that provides excellent conditions for sailing.
stone’s throw away from the capital on the southern side of the Tejo River, the Costa da Caparica is basically a long stretch of sandy, clean beaches to suit all types of beachgoer. Stretching right down to the Cabo Espichel, its sandy expanses are lined with acacia and eucalyptus trees and sienna-coloured cliffs however it is the first five miles to the south of the town of Caparica which are the most well-known.

The town of Caparica itself is a friendly yet simple affair with all the usual tourist trappings and facilities. Traditionally a fishing village, and women still peddle the fresh catch at the side of the street, it now serves mainly as the nearest summer resort for Lisboans escaping the city in the summer months and has a good variety of fish restaurants and bars. Colourful boats still reside on and work from the beach here, though nowadays it also sports a number of bars which play music into the night, and high on the cliffs behind lies a 16th century Capuchin monastery.

Despite its proximity to the city, the beaches are relatively unpolluted and tend not to get as crowded as their counterparts near Cascais, especially as you move away from the town centre down the coast. In the summer, a small train makes numerous stops alongside the nearly 10km of beach divided up into smaller sections by the dunes, some sporting their own wooden beach bar. Bathing is popular down the whole stretch, and people regularly surf here, however it is the beaches nearest to Caparica which have lifeguards on duty in the summer. The further away from the town you venture, the more sparsely populated the beaches become and about half way along the 20 train stops gay bathers are common, and further still nudism is the norm.

You won't find much seclusion on this coast, but if you want easy access to restaurants, cafes, and public transportation, join the crowds at the vast beaches of Caparica. They are popular and lively in the summer, even at night when most bars stay open until late with music and dancing.

In season, a little open-air train passes through most beaches along this coast -- ring the bell to stop at the beach of your choice (stops are numbered). The best ones are Morena and Sereia, surrounded by dunes and with good bars.

Increasingly popular is Praia da Cabana do Pescador due to its beach bar that offers live music, sofas, massages, and refreshing drinks. Although popular, it never becomes too crowded, as there is plenty of sand and the calmer waves here attract many to the water.
