Town: Italy, Castellammare del Golfo, Castellammare del GolfoAccording to historians and geographers, Castellammare del Golfo was originally the emporium (port) of the town of Segesta. So the history of this town facing the gulf was parallel - at least until 827 a.D., year in which it became Arab - with that of Segesta, because they both underwent the same events. However, the destruction of the town of Segesta did not mean also the destruction of its port, because the same Romans realized its importance, and for this reason increased its military features.
Under the Arab domination, the center, which they called Al Magarid (the little stairs maybe because of a step and uneven road) was given the connotations of a stronghold, which became impregnable with the construction of the small fortress and it became a very important trade ploe, with the setting up of the tuna fish processing industry and the loading platform.
We do not know much about the Norman and Swabian period, but it is probable that these have fortified Al Madarig that thanks to the construction of the fortress on the sea, started to be called 'Castello a Mar' (Castle on the sea). During the Aragonese period, the town was a baronial territory and became am important trade center dedicated to the exportation of wheat. Castellammare's further development - that preserved its quality of port even if it underwent positive and negative events - is to be finally ascribed to the period that goes from the 17th to the 19th century. Today, Castellammare is an important trade nucleus and its port is the center of the farm products exportation. Thanks to the extraordinary natural beauty of its coast and inland , the town became also a very important tourist pole
